I've never really seen a discussion on this, so I thought "what the heck." Well, have you ever noticed how in different Sonic games, it would often vary from 3 acts per zone (Sonic 1, Sonic 3d blast, etc.) to 2 (Sonic 2, Sonic 3, etc.) and other variations of those?
Well, basically, I was curious as to everyones favorite amount of acts per zone, and what you think as to why Sonic team would choose a specific number of acts per zone. Personally I loved Sonic 3 + Knuckles style, 2 zones with a challenging boss at the end of each, I thought it was very fun!

I got used initially to the 3 acts with a boss at the end, as my Sonic playing started off with the Master System.
However, I infinitely preferred being able actually to pick up some rings before dealing with the boss when I moved to MegaDrive (or Sonic Chaos).
To be honest, I don't think I've ever really noticed the format particularly. I think I like the variety between the different games. 3D Blast & S3&K were good in that you had variations on the theme music depending on which Act you were in.

I like having two acts and then a boss. I'm usually a lousy Sonic player, so two acts gives me a challenge. Three is almost just plain murder... sweatdrop

Instead of making it all neat and a perfect structure I think they should make it all random, for a bigger suprise.

Can't really say I've had any particular preference, though I do admit I got used to Sonic 2 and beyond's typical formula of two Acts with a boss at the end of the second.
The one-Act levels were okay, but some, like Hidden Palace, left me really wanting more to them.

I think 4 or 5 acts of the same themed area might be a bit too much. Unless there's just THAT much that can be done with a certain area, I think it's probably best to keep things short a sweet.
Besides...getting through just the regular two acts, and THEN getting killed and sent back to the beginning of the whole level just plain sucks.

I got used to the 2 act formula, but I don't mind 3 as a bit more of a good thing. smile

I'm pretty much used to all formats, but I do like the 3-act/1-boss zone the most.Quote: In the Metropolis Zonic in Sonic 2 had an Act 3...which was very surprising for me. Indeed, that ticked me off a bit. I think I get pretty obsessive-compulsive with order.

I prefer the 2 acts with bosses in each one, but mixing it up with a 3-acter once in a while is fine, too.

I am a fan of the 2 act followed by a boss scenario. I find it's just the right amount of length in an act without getting too repetetive or boring.
There is only so much of jumping and landing on the same type of platforms that I can take and you can only have certain amounts of design to an actual zone.
It gets me thinking of the original Sonic. Particually the beginning levels and since the controls were not as flexible, after act 2 was over, I felt myself thinking. "Oh god, not more..."
So yeah, definitely a 2 act stage is the better.
Two acts on Sonic Adventure would have been fun. That would have made things similar to the originals. Sonics levels kind of had that setting, but they were more like, two phases.
