(I know because I asked one of the carers and they said that you shouldn't laugh, especially not at people, because it was mean.) So I guess maybe Uzume is mean. But she is nice. That doesn't make sense."

With a delighted giggle, she picked through a bag of flower seeds. "Glorious," she said aloud, trying out a new word she had learned that day. "Glorious, glorious, glorious-" So what if everyone else seemed so much smarter? Life was simple, life was happy, and best of all, now she could stop stealing the flowers out of the containers full of wet stuff- water, that was water- and they would stop dying. Or so she'd been told. She was also told that she could have a little patch of dirt in the back of the place where she lived (people lived in houses, but she was not a people, so where did she live?) to grow flowers. "-Glorious!" Tanee's voice, a high soprano, echoed freely through the cluttered room she had made for herself. It was covered in many things- pretty scarves, shiny rocks, and (at this moment) thirty-three potted plants collected from around the house.
Not like she was a kleptomanic (and what a delicious word that was), far from it. She paid for her pretty things- with chores, with little cold things that hurt her hands and made them smell bad like something that had come out of a lady's finger when the sharp bladed thing had cut her open, and sometimes with being 'punished'. Although, what did punishment mean other than having to stay in here, with her flowers and her pretty things and sometimes putting the pretty thing she had taken from some part of this place to this room? It didn't... affect anything.
Oh well. There were more important things to do than wonder about sad things like punishment.
Like! Who gave her these flowers? She paused in her inspection of a large black seed with white streaks in it and looked thoughtfully at the ceiling. The vague impression of a man taking away the pretty pink flowers she had found in the hallway after breaking their vase drifted into her head. But no, why would he do that? Tanee frowned. He said he'd take her with him when he got her flowers.
That brought up a distant thought that someone had mentioned around her. Flowers meant... things. They meant many things. Tanee sighed, a whooshing of gusty warm air. Was this a good season for flowers, anyway? She peered out the window at a depressing white snowscape, then settled back into her bed and sighed again, louder. It seemed it was only a good time for spring in this room, her balmy pink room with all the scarves and lovely flowers. A moment passed as she closed her eyes tightly and counted to ten, then quickly whipped her head up over the windowsill.
Nope. Still white, and cold, and dark. Her breath misted the windows- impulsively, she drew a little smile in it, with smudges for eyes that revealed the dark tree against the moon. She pressed her forehead against the chilly surface of the window and willed for something to change. This... sucked. "Sucks," she breathed, flopping back onto her bed, partially, but ending up in a sprawl on the floor with a knot growing on her head.
How unfair. Tanee grappled with a knot of scarves, looking for the thick wooly one that some nice lady with a cart in the courtyard where the creepy fountain was had sold her for many of the little things with cold edges. She tied it around her neck, feeling better already as the white fluffy material brushed softly against her face. "Softie," she said, and that triggered another avalanche of word-memories. There were never enough flowers, and no one else helped her find them except for these two old people who wore black clothes all the time. The old lady called her lots of pretty names whose sounds were sweet on her lips. The old man called the old lady a softie, but he had a nice smile.
"Honey," she began, listing all the nice lady's names for her. "Sweetie-pie, darling, sugar, angel, lily. Lily!" Lilies were flowers, flowers with a sweet, mourning smell. She should have called herself Lily, but if she were Lily it wouldn't be a name that left a texture in her mouth like soft silk felt to her fingertips. It'd just be a name.
She pressed her pretty pink lips to the soft fabric of the scarf to muffle her laughter.

She sat on the carpet and stared at his back as he worked. Something about the rigid set of his shoulders told Tanee that her presence probably wasn't a secret, but that was all right. She didn't mind. If he knew she was there, he'd have to turn around and face her at some point. That was important. Of all the Tabula, Tanee was sure she had the cleverest questions. Was cleverest the right word? Maybe.
For a couple moments, she was quiet. Finally- it wasn't such a long time as she'd thought, maybe four or five minutes- the spring Tabula scooted forward on her hands and knees. "Locke," she said. He jumped and twisted in the chair to face her, but was silent, evidently waiting for her to say something. When she didn't say anything else, he turned back to the paper. Every so often, the man glanced over his shoulder at her.
Tanee pouted. "Lo~cke," she said again.
This time he turned a little slower, and said, "Yes, Tanee?" Again, she didn't answer until he became suitably engrossed in the notes he was making.
"Locke!"
"What?" She looked at him innocently, for all the world seeming like she hadn't asked it (even though she had to have been; there was no one else in the room).
With an aggravated sigh, he turned back to the paper. "...Locke." This time he didn't bother speaking, just shifted to stare at her over his shoulder. Tanee smiled, petal-pink lips parting to reveal pearly white teeth. "Hi!"
Flatly, he said, "Hello," and returned to the parchment. For a few minutes, she watched him knead his temples. Then, Tanee got up and flounced out the door...
and turned around and came back. "Locke, can I borrow Aquinas's pants?"
"Yes, fine, of course," he said, already caught up in his notes.

Halloween!
Tanee had heard great things about this holiday. There were boys in dresses and tresses and messes, and girls in bright colors that she loved. Oh, how she longed to be outside. And she would have been, except...
Well, she was grounded.
Supposedly she was not to take Aquinas's pants. They were called his and kept in his room for a reason, apparently. But they were such a nice green, with lots of softness, and she couldn't find any other pants quite as green or as soft. Also, they were Aquinas's pants. Tanee had a certain amount of hero worship where he came in, since he seemed so cool.
Still... to be missing this most fantabulous (a word she thought she might have made up) of holidays...
The door to her room opened a little, and she sighed very very loudly. "Go away idon'twanttotalktoyou," she said a little louder than she had to. Creakily, it swung shut again and only then did she remove her face from the window to peer at a black bag that sat just inside her room. With a feeling of foreboding- what if she wasn't supposed to have it? She wasn't quite sure what being grounded entailed but she knew she couldn't leave her room (when she tried someone politely escorted her back) and well. Tanee wanted to be able to leave her room sometime.
...But it was there. And she was curious. (Maybe her unexpected and unknown visitor had expected this. Tanee could not resist a mystery, even to her detriment. Not like she knew what detriment was.)
She threw herself across the room onto her bed, which was covered in books (unread) clothes (worn) comforters (stained with pink paint) pillows (also stained with pink paint) and cupcake wrappers (filched from the kitchen before she got grounded). Soon enough the black cloth bag joined a stack of eye-searingly bright clothes, and its festive orange and purple ribbons fell on the floor like so much trash. With a sense of trepidation (another fun word) she yanked the mouth of the bag open. In her eagerness to see the inside, the fragile fabric ripped and what seemed like the entire population of Odisse (in tiny triangular waxy things) spilled out onto her bed.
For a moment, Tanee was confused. Then, feeling full of the spirit of scientific exploration, she tossed one into her mouth. It was good.
The Tabula eyed the pile of candy on her lap, then the clock. Then she looked back at the candies.
"This's a challenge," she said, excusing her coming act of gluttony to herself. "I can totally eat all this. They think I can't. But I can." Whoever 'they' was, anyway... All in all, Tanee enjoyed a very productive and sugary Halloween.
The next day was a different story.

cross-posted to the rehoming event
Skip, twirl, arabesque- it was certainly a novel mode of transportation, but after almost two years of living in the palace in Odisse the staff was used to her little idiosyncracies. And mimicking some ballet down a hallway was nothing too special (surely they remembered the time she had knocked over a table and broken a precious antique vase? well, she'd fixed it in the end, so it didn't matter. right?).
It wasn't a long walk, just decently enough to make her a little tired by the time she got where she was going, and further investigation would have made it evident she'd actually been going by every door in the wing of the Palace where the Tabula lived. Tanee had been travelling up and down for the past hour, in fact, stopping off and leaving presents for people.
She understood that the day was called White Day. Apparently you were supposed to give gifts to people who had given gifts to you, and so, thoughtfully, she had made a painstaking list of people who she felt had given gifts to her. Like a lady servant who had found her lost bangle, and Locke, because she felt she had to, and Theron, who had amused her on a cold day a really long time ago, and Aquinas (for being awesome).
Well, she'd already been to the lady servant. Her gift to the lady servant had been a pretty flower- she had learned a little bit of how to preserve the plant in her Aashraya lessons, so she did, and then she gave the white carnation to the mousy lady. It wasn't the best gift but it was something, she thought.
And then she'd stopped by Theron's room but he wasn't there so she'd just left the bag with the pretty blue bracelet on his door. Oh well.
It had taken a while to locate Aquinas's room again, since it was kind of far, but when she got there she thought he might not want to be disturbed so she left his gift on the doorknob too. (It was another flower, this time a yellow rose which she had read meant friendship and respect. whatever respect was.)
Now she stood outside of Locke's room. She could hear his pen going scritch-scratch against the paper if she pressed her ear against the door. So he was in there but she felt abruptly apprehensive over invading his space. Not for nothing, but she'd never worried about bothering someone and it was kind of weird to worry about it now. What could she say, anyway? I've got a present for you...?
No. She shook her head and looped the bag around the doorknob, just like she'd done at two other doors, and smiled at it. Inside was a book she had overheard a servant talking about- apparently it had been lost (and Tanee hadn't taken it for once). And that wasn't a good present, but she had tried, right?
Duty done, she skipped away, humming a cute little song.
