He shook his head a little bit. "No, I mean..."

Maybe this just wasn't the best time to explain. The girl was obviously distracted by other things, and quite frankly, bringing up the issue would probably be the worst thing he could possibly do on Valentine's Day.

"Nevermind. Forget I mentioned it..." Demare said, rubbing his neck a little bit.

Without much thought, the teenager carefully picked Mayu up by the waist, and seated her on his knees. He then wrapping his arms around her middle and dropped his head down so that he could rest his chin lightly on her shoulder.

"I'm sorry," he apologized. "Everything just feels a little different to me. I don't want to ruin your day."

"Okay, if you say so," Mayu replied, taking another bite out of the rice ball. She was quite taken by surprise as she was picked up so easily by Demare, almost dropping her food but catching it in the nick of time.

"It's okay," she smiled, leaning over slightly so she could pat his head with one hand. "My day's not ruined," the girl assured him, giving a small laugh.

"...Now are you sure you don't want any of this?" Mayu asked, looking over to the teen. "It's really good!"

The halfling smiled a little bit as she patted his head, his wings stretching themselves out. He felt better now that the two of them were somewhat alone, and idly he wondered if that was because they were away from the crowd. Perhaps if he stopped caring about what other people thought about the situation, he'd be able to enjoy the day more.

Demare blinked a few times at the question, peering at what Mayu was eating. Getting a good (and closer) look at it now, the ball of rice didn't look like anything he'd really eaten before.

"What is it?" he asked curiously, not moving from where he was. He kind of liked sitting like that... Despite the fact that it was straining his back to be leaning down so far, it had been a long time since he'd been able to hold the other legend.

Mayu chewed ferociously and swallowed her bite, knowing not to talk with a mouth full in the prescence of proper company now.

"Onigiri!" She held the half-eaten riceball up so Demare could see it. "This one has fish in it, but we packed some other kinds too. There are pickled plums, beef, chicken..."

The teen seemed to be less apprehensive than before, which Mayu was glad about. She still had no idea what he had been so moody about before, but he seemed to be having a bit more fun now --- that was good, right?

"Pickled... plums?" he questioned, finally releasing the girl and sitting upright a little bit. It sounded... sour. "Is that the only one without meat in it?"

Even growing up, the angel still wasn't too fond of meat, though he did eat it once in a while only because he knew his body needed it. Whatever Demian did in the body during his week was his own business... but Clare had always made it a point to eat less the day before just to make the demon pay for eating all of the fatty things he did.

"I guess I'll give that one a try."

Mayu nodded, pulling out an onigiri that looked identical to her own and handed it to Demare.

"Sorry... Should I have packed something else?" The child smiled apologetically. "I wasn't quite sure what you'd like, so I just went with what I knew how to make. Maybe I should have brought some money, we could have eaten at a cafe instead?"

She thought for a moment before taking out a bottle of water, putting it on Demare's lap. "If it's too sour, here's some water to wash it out."

"Ah, no... it's okay," he told her, now feeling guilty for what he'd said. "We agreed on a picnic, after all. This is better than a cafe, anyway."

His monochrome eyes stared down at the rice ball in his hands, slightly wary now that he was holding it. On the outside, it looked tastey... but he was afraid of the inside. There was also a strange stench emitting from the food item...

Don't smell it, just stick it in your mouth, chew, and swallow, he told himself, taking a deep breath. Nothing to it. You can try something new. It would probably also make Mayu happy...

Finally, Demare lifted the onigiri to his mouth and took a quick, large bite out of the rice ball. At first, it tasted fine, but the minute that sour plum filled his mouth he began to chew slowly, almost cringing. He refused to spit it out... Forcing himself to swallow, he felt a chill run down his spine, his wings drawing in close to his back. There was no way he'd be able to eat the rest of that... Setting the ball in his lap, he picked up the water, twisted off the cap, and took a swig. That didn't help... In fact, that only spread the taste out more.

"I... I'm sorry..." the teen apologized, frowning slightly. "The idea looks really good, but... I don't think I like these pickled things. Maybe we can make more next time with something else in them?"

Idly, he peered inside of the basket, wondering what else Mayu might have brought with her.

"It is nice outside," Mayu agreed, though she smiled nervously at his sudden change in expression while he ate. If you don't like it, then don't try to swallow it...

"I probably should have called ahead to see what you would like," she replied, bowing her head slightly in apology, though the girl perked up at the suggestion. "That sounds fun! Maybe if Kimiko lets you come over again...?"

Mayu slid the lid of the basket farther back so that Demare could see the contents of the basket easier. In one side were several sets of rice balls lined up in rows, and in the other side sat several bottles of different juices, as well as a small plastic box of fruit that Mayu had packed for a snack.

"There's not much else," she muttered, giving a slight shrug. She thought for a moment before piping up with an idea. "Didn't I see a bakery right next to the park? We could go there to get a snack, at least. I don't want you to be hungry..."

"Or... you could come over to my house," he suggested, his cheeks reddening at the idea. Normally, it wouldn't be a big deal, but within the next month or two, a majority of the house would be gone. For the most part, it would just be the two of them...

"Hm? Oh, don't worry about me. I'm really not that hungry." The halfling hesitated for a moment. There had to be something they could do...

"There's... a new bakery that opened up in town," Demare started to say. "It might be a little crowded due to the day, but... they have this area where you can watch how they make things in the factory. If you wanted to go..."
PostPosted: Wed Jul 25, 2007 7:54 pm

"That might be easier," Mayu nodded, though she slightly wondered how difficult it would be to get Kimiko to let her out of the house with Demare again.

"You're going to get hungry eventually," she started, though decided to let it drop. Arguing about being hungry was wasting time when they could be searching for a good place to eat instead.

"A new bakery? That means... sweets, right?" The girl cocked her head in curiosity, springing out of her seat when her mind clicked. A bakery had teas and scones and cakes and cookies --- full of the delicious sugary things that Kimiko would rarely let her eat!

"Let's go, then! It sounds fun!" She closed the lid of the wooden basket quickly, its contents colliding together noisily as she swung it about in excitement.

Suddenly, he was beginning to regret the suggestion. She sounded too excited... but he decided to let it be. Standing up, Demare plucked the basket of flowers off of the ground before taking the basket of food away from Mayu. With how she was at the moment, all of the food she'd made would have been destroyed by the time they made it to the bakery.

"My house is on the way... we can drop these off so we won't have to carry them around all day," he told her, starting to walk toward the end of the park.
