I am completely new to wearing wigs... and I need a Chii wig for my costume.

Any advice on type of hair, wig, price, stores, actually, any advice in general about wigs would be helpful...

Also, should I buy one premade or cut it myself?

=^.^= Thankies!

By the way, can you straighten wigs? And is Elora (sp?) a good type of fiber?

I'm fairly sure you can straighten wigs to an extent (depending on how curly it originally is) but double check on that one. and yes Eleora is a good type of fiber. It feels very similar to real hair.

You CAN straighten wigs, but when you do, make sure to use a cold iron. If they wig is synthetic, it can melt the fibers and we definitly don't want that happening. Also, make sure to be careful in not pulling too hard, since the hairs aren't in as strongly as say our own hair. smile

^,^ Thankies everybody!

And, one last question. What is the difference between a skin top and other kinds of tops?

A skin top makes it appear that there is skin under the hair. It is great for where the hair parts, as opposed to other tops which are mainly netting.

Hmmm... I found one called Amanda (48"), which is the longest, perfect for chii... but it has no bangs. I would like a long wig... but do you think I should cut the bangs on that one, or get a wig with precut bangs?

It's up to you. Cutting bangs is difficult but not impossible. There is one called "Tina" that is fairly long with bangs. You might want to check it out.

The long wigs tend to be thin and somtimes dont look full. I wouldnt suggest the Amanda long wig.

oh my...

Yes, you can straighten hair, but I would NOT reccomend a straightening iron. As they mentioned above you can melt the fibers.

What you need to do is get the hair wet with realllllyyy hot water, hot water will help resolve the curls...

Let it dry and then comb and brush it.

My sister in law, katie bair is a MAD genious when it comes to wigs:

We will also be having a panel saturday morning I think, so please stop by if you have anymore questions =]

http://www.amphigory.com/ Usually has very very NICE wigs, katie usually gets her wigs from this site.
You want to look for a fiber named Kanekalon or Toyokalon, *Though Kanekalon usually works best*
Do NOT be a cheapo when it comes to wigs, I know the 15 dollars one at the halloween store is a great bargain, but their wig caps are trash and people will be able to see your hair through the wig (Especially if your hair is a darker color)

http://www.pettingzoowigs.com/wigtutorial_wigcare.html <-- as she states here, for a good wig, do not be afraid to have to spend:
Expect to pay between $25-$35 for a good chin-length wig.
Expect to pay between $35-$50 for a good shoulder-length wig.
Expect to pay between $50-$60 for a good butt-length wig.
Watch out fot the Godiva wigs as well, you might have to pay 100+ on one, but not because of the quality, only because they're longer wigs.

Premade can be very expensive, I know katie's styling buissness can come to voer 100 dollars some times...
for an example, Katie did a chii wig :
http://www.pettingzoowigs.com/wig_chii.html

and the base price is 343 dollars.

So, if you're feeling adventurous, I would say style it yourself. Buy a long wig, treat it with CARE (this means pinning it to a model head and keeping it out of the way of little siblings, pets, etc) and style.

Remember, do NOT use heating iron products like straighteners! And be patient! There is nothing worse than having a beautiful cosplay and a crappy wig T-T;;

hope to see you at otakon!

Thanks for the good advice everyone!

I ended up buying from amphigory. ^__^

Actually, I was feeling a little ambitious so I went for a wig with a little curl to be different. I think it will turn out really pretty.

Once again, thanks for all the help guys! It's mucho appreciated!
