"You stole my car, and instead of calling the police and reporting the theif and license plate numbers, I'm going to put a potentially damaging a life-altering curse on you that could stay with you for a very long time"? I think not. That's called "taking the law into your own hands." It's illegal. You let the justice system deal with it. As much as I hate the government and legal system, it's the truth.

Well, no--you could call the police and report the thief, AND put a potentially damaging life-altering curse or construct on him. Taking the law into your own hands? In a way, but it is NOT illegal. In fact, any sane court of law would laugh someone right out onto the sidewalk if they tried to accuse another of cursing them. Do you feel it would not be just to exact some punishment against them for doing your life harm by stealing your car? Or, better yet, slapping them with something that will not only make them miserable, but make them more likely to get caught, so you can get your car back?
Why shouldn't you? (Other than karma--I am, obviously, a non-believer in karma, which I consider to be a religious belief).

A little trick I've learned in the past when dealing with vendettes is instead of taking the law into your hands, tell someone who's sole purpose is to take out the 2x4 of justice and smack people around (or something to that effect).

Example:
You learn that your best girlfriend got beaten up by her boyfriend. She's in the hospital with broken ribs and a broken nose. You find out that the abuse has been going on for awhile and that the boy has done it to other people but hasn't been caught.
You wait for law enforcement to take the guy down. That should be the first thing you do. However, say that law enforcement can't catch the abuser. That's when you go to a different source of justice.
There are many beings and deities whose purpose is to punish people. What you do is have a ritual and bring an offering to the entity or deity. Then you tell them about the problem and ask if they can help you.
If the injustice is legit, then they'll deal with it in their own way. It gives you the feeling of revenge but you don't suffer any of the consequences since you did nothing but "pray".
Now, if your not a religious sort than I suggest working with spirits. You don't have to have a religion to work with them and there are many different kinds that could help out in cases like this.

That's my input anyway!

Good choice. I would love to see Ma'at squish some souls into oblivion with Feathers of Righteousness.

Ma'at, Yama, Sekhmet (sp?), Durga, etc. There's at least one god in every panthenon who specializes in bringing down the bad folks. There's a ton of non-deities too! There's even folks for different kinds of revenge! Gorgans are great for punishing people who abuse women, Furies are known to be good to punish sins against parents, etc.
The damage these entities do may not just be physical either. I once found a coven who that a dragon served them. They literally said that they controlled a dragon. So, after speaking to a dragon through some meditation (it was an Eastern sea dragon) I later found that the leaders of the coven went bankrupt and had to sell their house.

Yeah... don't control a dragon. You can't really do it.

Damnit, this is the third time I've had to type out this thing. My computer hates me dearly.

WingedWolfPsion: Just because you don't believe in karma dosen't mean you can denounce all morals. I'm not Christian, per se, but that dosen't mean I'm going to go break all of the Ten Commandments, just because they're the doctrine of morals allegedly set by God. That would be ridiculous. And it's true, no one can prove in court that you put a curse on someone, but that dosen't mean it isn't any less illegal. There is no legal justification of, "he did it to me first." So if you don't believe in karma and don't care about the law, dare I ask what morals you have?

iolitefire: Actually, in that example you brought up a touchy subject with me. If a friend or family member of mine was being abused by a husband or boyfriend, I'd go ballistic. Actually, a year or two ago, I misinterpreted a comment that my friend made. I took it for a kind of "my boyfriend's hitting me, but I don't want to tell you about it...but I still want you to know." So after a lot of scheming on my part, I mentioned something about it, and she was very confused. So we had a nice laugh, and she assured me he wasn't hurting her. Needless to say, they broke up anyway. But still, if I ever thought that my father was hurting my mother, I'd kill him without hesitation. That's one of the few situations where I'd disregard just about everything I've said in this thread. If a friend of mine's boyfriend put her in the hospital, ******** the law. I don't care whether they can catch him or not. I'd do whatever I needed to do to make him pay. Again, this is one of a very small amount of situations where I wouldn't care about anything I've said. But I wouldn't resort to magick, most likely because I don't know much about it, and would rather have the satisfaction of beating the living hell out of him.

I think my morals work just fine. Someone does me deliberate wrong, then I will punish them for that, if I feel it is justified in the circumstance, and worth doing. I feel that is my right.
I do follow the law of the land, far more strictly than most people.

The law of the land says ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about what I may use my psi abilities for, and I hope it stays that way. lol

I disagree with you all I want, but it's not going to change what you think or believe is right. But...I'm just trying to avoid a generation of children who think that exacting revenge on every single person who has wronged them is ok. Especially in a metaphysical manner. Weapons can scar your skin, but that heals a hell of a lot easier than the mind. Magick can scar the mind. If someone hurts you physically, putting a mind-altering curse on them is not equal punishment. But, like I said, I'm not going to change what you think.

Well, part of the reason the kids think that's a fine way to deal with problems is because it hasn't become quite REAL to them yet. They don't believe there CAN be any consequences. It's true, there are no psi police...but there sure are a lot of vigilantes out there. And they'll do much worse to you than the police would for equivalent crimes.
Go around abusing your abilities with no justifiable cause, be flamboyant about it...and some day, someone may decide to shut you down for good. Take that seriously.
Learn to defend yourself first, too. Attracting lots of attention when you're starting out isn't so wise. Because not all of those vigilantes are playing with a full deck...and what you consider a right use of ability, they may disagree with...
And then there are the folks who simply like to hurt and dominate others. It's a feudal anarchy you're dealing with, and discretion is usually the better part of valor.
No matter how good you are, there is always someone out there, somewhere, who's better than you are.

I'd still put a world of hurt on someone who stole my car. razz

That's...better I suppose. Oh, and I meant "I can disagree with..." Typos bother the hell out of me. Damn you, OCD! I really have to...restrain myself from fixing it. ...It will be ok...I think.
