There are many of those gem places in the Spruce Pine area. Here are a couple of links for you:

Emerald Village (my sons and I liked going to this one; there is also a place to there to have the stones cut and they will ship them to you when finished, which is great for folks like us who don't live in the area)

Gem Mountain (much like Emerald Village and has stone cutting/shipping available, as well as a small gem museum; this was our second choice as the other was closer to where my mom used to live)

You can google Spruce Pine and gem mines and get lots more. Hope that helps! biggrin

Franklin, NC is supposed to be the Gem capital of the world or something. There are a lot of rock shops around there.
My Dad has a lot of rocks with garnets (too small to be jewelry) in them that he found by walking the shores of Lake Chatuge in the winter when they have let a lot of the water out of the lake. Gemstones wash down the creeks & into the lake. That is likely true for all the TVA lakes out in the mountains.
Amethyst, Garnets, Sapphires & I don't know what all else (& occasionally still a bit of gold) can be found in the NC & GA mountains.
