swedish_soup I never thought that Seaworld treated animals poorly, but I'm still pleased to hear of their strict but necessary rules. I'm also thrilled about the recycling. My Mom started recycling programs going in 5 towns around us, plus ours . . . we don't treat our animals poorly we treat them very we'll and with respect

Hm... Well, I never heard about how it is from a worker, but are all the animals being rehabilitated? I'm sure it's great for the animals that get to be released, but zoo life still is not nearly as good as life in the wild, regardless of what food they get and how well they're groomed. For example, dolphin life spans are at least twenty years (I'm not exactly sure how long) and captive dolphins average about five. On a lighter note, it's so weird when people say "Hey look, it's Shamu!" whenever they see a killer whale. SeaWorld has dominated the species. confused

Well, one thing you have to consider with social marine mammals, particularly killer whales, is that they don't just let any one of their species that arrives join there group. Most orca pods are families, kept pretty exclusive to one another. Even if the whal was let go, there's a good chance it would never be allowed into a social group nearby, unless there were plenty of other bachelors or single ones that had developed their own bunch. Being pretty dependant on social groups, the orca might not even survive on its own without organized hunts and such.
For example - I saw on Animal Planet once about these two groups of killer whales that inhabit the same area. One group is permanent, staying all year. The other is nomadic, passing by often on their regular migrations. Both groups have completely different noise signals and calls, like having different languages, and they don't associate with each other. They wouldn't even understand each other's noises if they tried.
