I am bored.

Why do we get bored? Why can't we be content to live in a life of luxury? I have a big house, I am well fed, I have a dog, a playstation, a nice computer, a few good friends, and a huge backyard with lots of woods. And yet, I am bored. Why? Have my senses simply gotten used to the things that are around me? Do they no longer promote the excitement and exquisite happiness they once did? Or is it that I no longer take joy in the same things that I once did? Am I bored because my brain is changing, and it needs new information to process in order to grow?

How many of you claim boredom at this very moment? Is it simply that we all get tired of doing the same things, day after day--even if the timing changes? There are so many things we can be doing, and aren't, that would entertain us. Why are we stuck in our 'boredom?' Is it a frame of mind? Are there people who see being bored as being 'cool?' It's like....I could do this.....I could do that....but I don't want to....or I don't really feel like it..... So we're bored.

Or maybe it's just me...in this tiny little town....seperated from my friends by jobs and camps....

Any comments?

I like it. Good Point...according to some scientist or something...athropologist I think said that an average person can only be interested in one thing for 9 years and then they start to lose interest...that's why most people have a mid-life crisis in their mid-thirties.

For smaller things...like say...Gaia. People would probably lose the interest they had when they first started it. they want something new and exciting...fishing is not enough anymore...So gaia realizes this and is constantly changing...ie. Gaia Slots.

think of your brain as a knowlege drug post...you take aleve for a headache...it goes away...you keep taking it for a year or so and it's affects are not as powerful...your immune system get used to it and you switch to tylenol.
The electric waves in your brain become more connected so to speak to your synapsis so thoughts flow easier so it becomes more of just something you do...you become used to it hence "bored"

You want something new and exciting start new brain waves...put in another gear for the hampster to spin.

I think it has more to do with our chaotic nature. We need change and we need stimulation. But at the same time, we control what we need, and how we get it. If we want something to be fun and exciting, it will be, if not, then it won't. Bordom, like all other emotions, is only partially chemical. It is also psychological, and must be handled as such.

We take things for granted, that's why we're bored. We get used to the way things are. So, we get bored with it. Call it lack of stimulation, or whatnot, but we get bored with most things that we're around for a long time. I have a friend that can't keep a job for over three months, because she gets bored of it and stops going to work, and then quits. It's strange to think that people 30 years ago would've killed for the things we have today.

People are naturally never truly satisfied with what they have. You might be happy with what you have for a while, but then you want more of it. Millionares want more money. Geniuses want more knowledge.

Boredom is the result of wanting something more that you cannot neccesarily identify. I become bored when there's nothing interesting to read. I want to read, but I don't know what. People who have very little are rarely bored, because there is so much they want that one of those things is hopefully within reach. Wealthy people, of people with great intellectual wealth, depending on what kind of people they are, are more likely to be bored.

Yes... it's funny...

Think of a destination in mind. Is it really the feeling of accomplishment, or the journey to that goal?

I sit here... with a relatively good computer capable of what satisfies me... don't want much more with it.
MP3 player... has nearly enough music to keep me somewhat stimulated in thought and hearing. (Yet... I would like some Van Halen.) Even 5GB goes a long way...
GBA, PS2, GameCube... and games to play with a sister... or alone. Classic remakes are good....
And... for the simpler pleasures, there's paper, pencils, pens, and little shiny things of mine. 4laugh

Yet... there is so much more out there. No more material things... I actually want a bit less than what I have. So many things I never even touch... like childhood toys. Books long read, and below what would keep one of my age and "mentality" entertained. Yet... it's not books I want to read either.
Knowledge and just seeing things... it's one of the simplest things out there... but the hardest to come across the "golden jewel" when you get to this point.
The only way I can see to cure this boredom... brought on by questions of the self... is to go visit far away places. I have been halfway around the world once... I want to go visit areas between, and see Japan again...

Why I would be like this? I don't know... technically, and logically, one should be entertained with all this... stuff... but I'm not. It's part of the reason I'm not concerned with money or buying things. Sure, recently I bought a new game, downloaded some things, bought a gamepad for the computer, and added some songs... but... it's not what I seek... it's a poor substitute.

Attempting to refrain from constant rambling on my end... I take naps now... it's not boredom really... but lack of new things out there. I guess my brain hungers for knowledge of the world and of who I am... but it doesn't see anything coming, so it waits patiently... and so do I. sad

Why do we get bored?

Those who are ambitious and dissatisfied are more likely to "be fruitful and multiply", as it were.

It seems to me that things which are new are "interesting". Things unlike what we have seen so many times before. This is why cliches are not interesting, even if they once were. This is why things such as travel or new technology are interesting.

That's what I think.

I think boredom can result from a variety of reasons... your brain needs a break, you're lazy, you are doing something stupid & pointless but can't stop, or you just want time to pass by. Either way... I think that a lot of people are addicted to boredom. Boredome is completely controllable by your outlook upon your surroundings and your goals.

I find that I get bored a lot when I'm overwhelmed... because I don't want to work on the 300 million tasks I got at hand, I'd rather relax and bore myself with the tv or a manga or something. Or when I'm stuck someplace I don't want to be and have to wait... like at a hospital or Dr.'s office. Hell, I enjoy my mp3 player any other time, but int he Dr's office, when I need it most, it starts to bore the hell outta me. Or maybe it's just the drab environment of the Dr's office. Another example, is when I REALLY don't care about what's going on around me... say like everyone is watching football (which I don't like) or I'm in a meeting and they're discussing something that has nothing to do with me at all... that's when I am MOST bored. My mind wants to escape but I'm trapped...

People bored on Gaia make me laugh... same as people bored in chat rooms. It's THEIR choice to go there... and they are only getting bored because they're not engaging anyone or not looking for something to engage themselves with. Ah... and then there's the moments when no one around you will acknowledge what you said... that's boring, too.

Conclusion
Being bored results from your mind not being engaged. You have no interest in what you are doing... therefore, your mind is trying to check out on you. Unless you force yourself to snap out of it, you will remain in your boredom redundancy cycle until something else forces you out of your rut. Sadly... this occurs with all emotions. I'll be happy until something causes me to fall out of that emotion... either another thought or intervention from an outside source.

That's called laziness. I certainly feel it all the time. I constantly tell myself, "I should be doing 'x'" instead of staring at the computer screen.
