katiekat40 Xule][neiyu its really annoying me all these little jrockers suddenly thinking they're japanese. being japanese actaully requires having some japanese blood, or least having been born in japan! you're not japanese because you listen to dir en grey and go around calling everbody "kawaii" or "-chan". you're not japanese because some how you got it stuck into your head that you're a "ninja" and wear those stupid naruto headbands. its really ******** annoying me! and whats more its dicouraging a friend of mine who has ambitions to live in japan, and actually knows something about the japanese people, because she thinks she's going to be mistaken for one of those posers. XD people actually do that? There is a guy in my japanese class that does that. He wears one of those dumb naruto headbands and i'm just like gonk ....

Well to each his own, I suppose. smile I used to wear a do-rag all the time, so maybe it's just his way of expressing himself. We each want to stand out in a way but also belong. 3nodding

It's a good workout and it helps in a pinch if someone is trying to hurt you. smile

I am not going to bother to read the rest of this thread nor the rant of Japanophile. I am a Japanophile. Unlike the children nowadays who think Japan is just anime, ninjas and sushi I actually took the time to meet Japanese people, learn the language and live over there in the country side. I love Japan passionately and her people and language. It is a cool country but it does deeper than manga, playstation and wii games and entertainment things of that nature. I have formed a bond of a lifetime with friends I made in Japan and have been adopted by a family there so my heart beats passionately for there.
Anyway, these kids that run around asking if you can see ninjas in Japan or if I know who was the creator of such and such anime are just enthralled with what they can get their hands on in their respective countries. Ignore them. They never breathed the air in Japan nor have they taken the time to hold conversations of politics, history or such with any Japanese citizens.
For those who have a deep desire to understand the festivals, the ancient meanings of Kanji or how life is for salary men, house wives and scuba divers they are the ones to be encouraged to go. Original poster tell your friend that she wont be mistaken for a poser when she goes there. The Japanese arent stupid they can see through the fakeness. People who have a true desire to understand the inner workings of Japan will be the ones to gain insight and learn what Japan is all about.
Do encourage your friend to find Japan Culture associations. There are Meetups she can go to (Meetup.com), be an English tutor for Japanese students studying at local colleges and even go to restaurants where the owners are true Japanese and speak the language and have roots in a prefecture in Japan.
Okay. I said enough. I am a Japanophile and not a manga whore. I speak the language proper and Kansai-ben and I am more than happy to tell anyone my experiences there or give tips to what to do before they leave for the land of the Rising Sun. Mail me anytime. If you are interested in the JET Program then PLEASE do email me. I want to help anyone who has interests for it.
