Even if something is killed "humanely", I still don't believe it's right.
Killing something isn't humane, no matter how it's done.
[ I'm vegetarian if you couldn't tell ]

How do you figure that? There's plenty of ways to kill things that ensure that they don't suffer.

Because if a person killed another person in any manner to eat them it would be considered barbaric.
I don't think it's right to kill a living thing - no matter how it's done.

Well, you know, that the vegetables aren't particularly crazy about being pulled out of the ground...

Ok so yeah. My feelings towards eating animals is simply this... don't do it. I mean most of the animals are tortured before they are killed. Think about this... You wouldn't want any of your pets to be tortured, then killed, then eaten. Nor would you want that to happen to a family member or friend. So why is it ok to do it to a cow or pig? It's not. They do feel pain too.

mrgreen I don't eat meat either.

I live in an area where many farmers treat their animals well and don't inject crap into them. Some of the farmers are friends of mine. I buy their eggs and milk. But I don't eat anything the larger industries are selling, because you just never know how they treat their chickens and dairy cows.

I eat meat and I always will. You don't have to be, but the thing about modern society is the fixation on skinniness. I'm not saying that being fat is healthy, far from it, but being skinny isn't either. The percieved "health" in vegetarianism/veganism comes from the emaciation of poor nutrition. The ideal body is lean, muscular, and capable of running long distances without tiring. Meat is often an absolute nessecity when you're trying for the best figure. I guess it's possible to carefully replace your vitamins with vegetable ones, but it's difficult.

Consider vitamin B-12. It's a needed vitamin that only comes from meat. Supplements you say? Guess where the supplements get B-12 from. Yep, you guessed it, meat.

I love animals, but meat is something I won't give up. I've been vegetarian and sickly, and I love being athletic and healthy.
I agree that we value being stick-like more than needed, but that's not what being a vegetarian does. Of course, if you eat the same meal you would with meat, simply removing all the meat, you're going to miss a lot of necessary things. As long as you make sure you get enough calories from healthy-ish food, you're good to go.

B12
Although that is only naturally found in animal products, it is also found in dirt and can be made artificially. Not saying you should eat dirt like many places (south [of] US), but if you eat locally grown things and it's only "lightly" rinsed, then you'll get enough. You only need two micrograms (infinitesimally small units), and that'll likely be there in whatever you'll be eating off that carrot or potato. If it's local, it will probably also be healthier, being exposed to less e coli and such. B12 can be made in labs, though, so it's not always from meat. If it is lab-made, it'll say in the ingredients (probably at the end, due to it's rarity) cyanocobalamin. By the way, B12 deficiency isn't more common in vegans than meat-eaters, as an interesting fact.

Proteins
Protein is everywhere, don't even go out of your way to get it if you're a(n aspiring) vegetarian. And, don't forget potatoes. Eat your day's worth in calories of potatoes, and you'll get all the amino acids you need, without using animals!

Me and my cousins last year, saw a documentary on the internet on what they do to the animals, before, and when they do it. Even for Dairy Cows, it sucks a**.
For chickens, they keep them in very small, crowded coops. They keep cows locked up in a small space so they can't turn around. And I think they put the pigs in crowded pens? The most discusting part of the video we watched, was that the people would hit the pigs on the head with a club. Or they would pick them from their hind legs and smack them onto the ground. The part I watched about the cows being killed... was torture. They would slit the cow's throat, and all of the bload would slowly come out while the cow is being chained from the ceiling upside down. I don't even want to post down the rest X.X

Even after I saw this video, I still continued to eat meat. I just couldn't live as a vegitarian. =(

I do eat meat, but I kindof feel guilty about it at times.
My reasoning for still eating is it because we, as humans, are designed to eat meat. It's natural for us, & healthy..
But then I think, there's so many other alternatives to eating meat & you can get the same nutrients... I don't know, maybe I will try going lacto-octo vegetarian before going all the way, if I decide to..

I made a lot of excuses when I ate meat, as to why I did it. But I finally came to relize that I can live healthy without it, and just the thought of an animal in my body, doesn't feel right. I don't mind if others eat meat, I just can't come to it myself.

Yes, it has studies of how the factory farming is improving with the help of Temple Grandin, an autistic woman (/ hero) who creates the environments in many factories to make it less stressfull and painful for the beef cows.

It also has studies about other animal studies based around anthropomorphising them.

But it is an amazingf book by an amazing author.

(My story time)
I work on an organic farm where I raise pigletts, chickens, turkies and cows for food. When the owners/ family friends bring the animal to slaughter my family buys the food and we eat it.

I think I can accept this because I know the difference between a pet, and a working animal.

What do ya'll think?

Sounds interesting I might check it out 3nodding . I definitely respect what you guys are doing a lot more than some of the inhumane treatment, but I personally could never have an animal to eat it. It's a personal choice and I don't judge anyone who does this. I can survive fine without meat (some can't) so I don't eat it. My sister's guy told me he loves the native way of looking at meat. How they used all the meat and thanked the animal after and he wanted to know what I thought. I said well they needed it to survive, I don't. I don't need to put an animal in that situation to say "thank you".

Where are you from about Silver?

From? If you're talking about states I come from a little congested state called Connecticut. ^^

I noticed what you posted in my thread, and I feel almost liek the book animals in translation would be perfect for you. It also talks about how humans have engineered certain animals to meet their needs.

I don't know how I can do what I do at the farm, but I guess I've been raised that way. I'm not a huge advocate of god, but I was raised to think that we as people have morals. One of the morals is to not abuse our gifts. ie. Animals.

Believe me, I'm not a giant meat gobbling machine, I still volenteer at vet clinics and teach pet first aid to 4-H groups. I have passion for animals, but I know my place and their place. And to me a cows place is at McDonalds (poor analogy I know) and my place is at the table.

I'll look into the book 3nodding

I don't really have a religion, I just keep my mind open to all of them. I got into another discussion where the person said I was basically controlled by my Christian belief. Well, I am not Christian, I'm more pagan than anything but any who.
It must be my morality that won't allow me to put another being into my body. I used to eat meat and I love animals as much as I did then. I think I just sat down and really thought about meat, and I changed my way of thinking. My father is a trapper and his entire side of the family are hunters. We are decedents of Daniel Boone, so they think they have to keep the legacy or something xp . We raised our own chickens on our small farm. I have also been taken on hunting trips taught all the ropes, but I just can't kill or eat an animal. I don't think it's a fear thing, I just don't logically feel the need to end somethings life for me. I understand them but they still havn't accepted me or my sister's vegetarianism.

If you have accepted their hunting and trapping then it is only right that they accept your vegetarianism.

Daniel Boone eh? I've heard of him. 3nodding Was in the beaver and otter fur trade, if I remember rightly?

I couldn’t tell you what fur trade he was in I guess I never went looking for that fact. But I know he was a man of the woods and loved the wilderness mrgreen . Also he is famous for a coon hat that he wore in all his paintings. I know that was false, he hated those hats. Ha’ and there use to be a television series about him xp . Actually your question makes me want to look into Daniel. I think I will do some further research on the guy, especially if I am related to him xd .
