The Dread Pirate Ghosty The examples you just gave are all pretty good, the worst is the Sakura cosplay--and it's still nicely done. I honestly feel like I understand what you're going for, myself... it's just like you don't like or understand the response you're recieving. I've not ever been to a convention, I've not ever hung out or gone deep into cos-play culture, but I have never gotten the impression that fatgirls shouldn't cosplay if they can choose a character they can pull off. Skinny girls are the same way, they can't pull off every anime character they try--this isn't limited to just fat girls, it goes to everyone.
If anybody is complaining about those, they're not somebody you need to listen to.
You're going to run into hateful people, not just against fat people, you'll find them when talking about bone-thin people and average weighted people. You seem more fixated on the fact that it's against fat girls, rather than the fact that the women are wearing something unflattering and as such being ridiculed for it by some immature assholes. So what if it's online? You can find ridicule of almost anybody on here, if you look for it. I know Cosplayers who look forward to seeing girls cosplay, but I don't hear them complain about fat-girls or skinny girls in flattering outfits... They complain about unattractive girls or girls who could be perfectly fine if they just accepted what they can and cannot wear and played up their best features.
My friends tell me all the time "You're so cute. I wish I could dress cute." they accept the fact their looks don't play well into cute, and they don't try it so much... although I honestly think if they'd allow me to take them shopping they'd see they're wrong, they just have to find the right way to play up their cute-ness.
What I run into a lot is plus-sized people get so focused on only seeing ridicule against themselves. People in general think they're the only ones out there with problems--the grass is always greener on the other side. We're told every day in every way by the media we're not pretty unless we fit into a specific mold that the vast majority of the world doesn't and will never fit into, weather or not we're fat, skinny, young, old, purple, blue or green. lol no that's not it at all. I get what you're saying. Wear things that are unflattering and you'll get unflattering attention. I can agree with that. That wasn't the point I was orginally trying to make though, that's where my frustration is coming from. What I was trying to express is larger girls can cosplay as cutsie things just as well as the rest of 'em. So why shouldn't they? Should anyone listen to people who say they shouldn't? No. Should it bother me or anyone else for that matter? No. Does it? Yes, a little bit. It bothers be because I think they're wrong. Yes, everyone has their problems but this is part of one that means something to me. This being something that deals with other problems such as if you're not x you're not beautiful. I know all too well the effects it has on our culture. Now I've never cosplayed. I've been to cons but have never dressed up in costume myself. So maybe it shouldn't matter to me. I'm fixated on the fat aspect because it's repeated over and over again fat girls shouldn't cosplay, no fat girls because it's out there. That frame of mind is insulting to me. I'm simply pointing out that it is insulting. But it's like I can't be mad about the statement they're making. That's what I don't understand. Why cannot I be mad about that statement?

You can be mad about the statement they're making, I'm not trying to say you can't. I would advise not bothering to be, I don't see what some random loser's opinion matters for, honestly. My thing is that people are quick to find a reason to be insulted, and it's just a waste. They get insulted if the person is honestly not trying to insult them, they get insulted if the person is trying (which basically rewards the person by giving them exactly what they were going for--why do you want to reward them?)
Like I said, I don't look at the cosplay pages, but if it's repeated over and over that fat girls can't cosplay that doesn't really mean anything, they do. They're going to do it.
What I've been saying is you're letting it insult you that random nobodies are saying you can't dress as something cutesy if you want, but honestly you can as long as (I feel like a broken record here) it's flattering. No, you don't look exactly like the character, but I honestly don't believe if these fat girls were cosplaying in costumes that flattered them (which is possible to do, despite your size) then the people would have any reason to complain and you'd find it less. There's just a great deal of fat girls in bad cosplay. Most larger girls I see in cosplay I cringe over, not because they're fat but because it just looks bad.

I think that Yuna cosplay is absolutely adorable. heart She looks fantastic.
Unfortunately the whole problem with how society views us fat people just bleeds through into the cosplay community. Bodytype is everything nowadays. I honestly feel that society doesn't give a crap about a person's character, but just cares about whether or not they look skinny. What you're describing here is just another expression of that.

I have no problem with larger women or men cosplaying what they want... the only thing I ask is that they choose something that will look flattering...
Certian characters wear costumes that just well.... aren't made for all body types. Like Morrigan... from Darkstalkers.. I MIGHT could pull her off because if I got a decent corset and the right assories... I would accually be covering the majority of my body and not look like I'm bursting at the seams lol...
but one person's body is different from another.. a larger set woman could pull off something super showy and sexy because her "fat" is in differnt places that another... where one woman may have a large middle tummy... another may have exsessively large hips and thighs...
It's all really dependent on the person and doing their best to make a flattering costume.... don't dress like you're a size 2... it's that simple. Skin tight clothes or something with your belly hanging out isn't flattering. >.<

I've gone as kairi from the second Kingdom Hearts game outfit and Rinoa from FFVIII Both costumes were very nice. People did comment that I'm fat though.

I've been into cosplay and costuming since '03, and I can tell you, there are ways around normally skimpy costumes. Put it this way, I did Shiva from FFX, which as some of you know, wears next to nothing. I used a colored body-stocking and compensated. I got tons of compliments from strangers and many pictures. I agree with whomever said that it's not the size of the girl, it's the quality of the costume.
Other than that, I really don't give a damn what they think. I know my costume was accurate and flattering, because I spent months making it...a few snide remarks isn't going to make me throw away all that I put into the cosplay.
The fact is, no matter how excellent you look, there is always going to be at least one person that has a problem with it...and therefore is going to say something negative. That's when you just put up with it, because you know deep down people like that have insecurites with themselves if they have to insult people to feel significant. Then you can just pity them. ;P

Ironically, I know the EXACT thread you mentioned, as its how I found this guild sweatdrop
But aside from that, I think its ridiculous to say that anyone of any size shouldn't cosplay as any character for any reason. If they are devoted enough to that character to want to dress up as them, who cares if they have the "appropriate" body type for it? People who freak out over bigger girls (or bigger guys) cosplaying as thin characters really need to look at their own shallowness and get a life. Ugh. Makes me annoyed enough to want to go cosplay myself....aside from the fact that I can't sew and have never been to a con wink

This topic is really interesting to me. I've been cosplaying myself for about 5 years now (see my post in the albums thread?) and honestly, this is the first time I've actually seen or heard someone with a problem about plus-sized cosplaying. I've had my picture on countless websites and even in some cosplay/anime magazines and I've always felt nothing short of welcoming and acceptance.
Of course I can see that although I haven't been faced with the problem first hand, some people may have been ridiculed for it. That, for lack of a better word, sucks. I'd say that certain anime outfits were unsuitable, but really...to each their own. I myself would never wear anything that showed off half my a**, or even my mid section. However I've seen girls at my con of choice do it on more than one occassion. Maybe its just the atmosphere that this con has, or maybe its just that we're fortunate enough not to have so many judgemental people (or at least any that are outspoken) attending, but as far as I have seen, there's been no problem.
I think that this issue is really only as bad as any other issue related to it. For instance, one could argue (though not myself) that "fat" people don't belong in magazines, or on television, or any other type of thing like that. I'm saddened by the fact that a website like the one discussed here is out there...but I just suppose that the world won't change so easily. Probably, the best thing to do is to not be hurt by it (however hard that may be). It's unfortunate that whomever has the need to point out plus-sized cosplayers in such a disrespectful way has that need in the first place.
