On my ride home last night, I passed by my local Tower Records, and saw that it has to close. Although I only bought one thing from there, I immediately thought, of all the people, that must've lost a place special to them. I, myself, had never had a real place to call my own sanctuary, so I've never been too emotionally attached to any one place, or object(that might change, when I'm with my beloved.) But to everyone here, what place have you long considered your special place? And just what makes it so special?

To me, it was the corner of my block, where there was an old, abandoned house, which was crumbled. All that was left was the front porch. Me and my neighborhood friends used to hang out there at night, getting yelled at by an old lady, then having all the other adults defending us because it was only 10PM on a summer night. The government tore it down (along with my favorite tree, no less) to make a new house. I felt a little...empty about it. It was, in Bokutoh Ryo's words, my "sacred Hang".

For me, it's the wooded area near my house. The neighborhood kids and I used to play in there all the time, naming everything. It was our own sacred "land". It's right next to an elementary school, though, so one of the teachers finds it okay to go in and chop down a lot of the sticker bushes and trees to create a path for the little'ns, which pisses me off.

I'm not sure if I actually have any real places that I hold dear. Yes, there are small spots here and there that I enjoy walking to, or just exploring, but it isn't so much an endearment as a curiousity.

The first is an old, beautiful victorian house about a block away from where I live. Between fifty years ago and now (somewhere in there) a man hung himself in the attic, and ever since the building has been changing owners again and again. Part of the wrap-around porch was torn off at some point, and there are several large trees outside it. It's a gorgeous place, and I would really like to go inside, or perhaps buy it one day and restore it.

As strange as it sounds, I find the morbid place both peaceful and exciting.

My second haunt is an old half-abandoned glove factory about seven blocks away, close to the center of town. It's made up of several buildings and a lot of the windows are boarded up. When I walk around it, I feel all sorts of urges or curiousities build up inside me. The factory is just a fun place to be around, and as it's an old building, I'm easily drawn to it. It's also probably one of the bigger structures in town.

Other than that, I enjoy the woods practically anywhere and water is very soothing to me.

There are a couple places in this world that I can honestly say I feel safe and at peace in, but unfortunately I've yet to find my true home. My home, the one I plan on living in for the rest of my life, I pictured up in the mountains, maybe in a small valley, in Utah somewhere in the middle of no where. I'd have a nice-sized house with a large fenced in area outside for all my dogs to run around in. I'd have some rodent rooms for my rats and chinchillas, and there would be several bedrooms and a couple big living rooms, great for movies and video games. I always picture it with an Asian culture feel with some of my personal artistic touches. Also, fireplaces and that warm cozy feeling with a nice kitchen for cooking.

However, that dream won't come to pass for some time, but until then, I find sanctuary on the beaches and rainforests of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I also love old stone buildings, soft fields at night with a cool breeze, and for some odd reason, radio towers. I also have a hobby of finding unique parks in odd locations, which I grow partial to as well. That, and bonfires in the middle of the woods.

I like where I live now. Even though it's a studio apartment, it's cozy and warm and everything is exactly close enough to get at and everything's in it's place. I have books and movies and music and video games all in their places, looking out like friendly companions, and it cheers me up on these cold days. I think I'd be lonely in a larger house.

I love my grandmother's house, though. She has pictures all over all her walls, and you can just stare at them for hours. When I was a kid, I'd climb the fig tree in her backyard and get up on the storeroom's roof and hang out with my sister. We'd also jump across to the carport (although it's really dangerous because the carport's beams aren't cemented in), and hang out there too. I always feel comfortable and safe at my grandmother's house. She's always cooking something (or you can smell something she just cooked) and she's always offering you soup or something to drink or a warm blanket. It's a place that smells like love and caring, and the beds are always so soft and warm that you just sink into them. ^_____^

I love my grandmother, and I guess that all the love that comes to her (not just from me but from all the family and friends she has) just sticks in that house so it always feels full even if no one is there.
