There was an article in the newspaper the other day about Bindi Irwin, and what's going to happen in the future for her.

You know, like that documentary she was shooting with her dad when he got killed. Things like that. But one thing that really stood out to me was that she was going to have her own fitness program to encourage kids to live healthily. I was reading this and thought, "Well, she's the daughter of the crocodile hunter. It can't be that bad."

I saw an ad for that same fitness program today. It was that bad. Seriously, from the thirty seconds of footage that I got from this thing, it wasn't hard to decide on what I thought. It looked like the Wiggles and the Hooley Doolies dancing with some random, misplaced kid. And I was ashamed, embarrassed and afraid.

The first two probably don't have to be explained. But afraid - I was afraid that Bindi was going to become some over-exploited child; the one who isn't actually famous, but who's related to someone who's famous and is... mooching off that person's fame. The worst thing about it is, she doesn't have too much of a say in it with her age and all. It's all those producers and stuff who're making the decisions for her.

Think about it. Wouldn't it be horrible if Bindi Irwin became some sort of Disney-sponsored teenager, like Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan? One day they're just normal people, the next day they star in a teen sitcom, and then the next they have a year-long recording contract and a string of trashy movies behind them. I would hate for that to happen - for someone with as much of a head-start and potential as Bindi to go to waste like this.

What I've seen of Bindi is the same zeal for animals that her father had. She seemed curiously unphased by his death, but she's very little. My friend's dad died when he was the same age (I think she's five) and he really didn't grasp what had happened until he was much older. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, though, and I hope he lived long enough to impart a lasting respect for nature.
That said, at her age she really has no idea what's going on at all. The concept of television is probably a little beyond her grasp. She knows she watches it, and people she know watches it, but the fact that the whole planet sees it escapes her. There is no message or meaning in her show. I haven't seen it, but it's probably part kid behavior and part scripted-for-television shenanigans.
Hillary Duff seems to have made a name for herself with actual talent whereas Linday Lohan seems like a drunken idiot but that's just my opinion. On the subject of child stars, though, most who come of age will later say that they regret the whole thing and have horrible memories of it. All I can say is that I hope she doesn't suffer.

Don't get me wrong; I don't have any issues with people making themselves famous.

It's just that when some sort of Lindsay Lohan thing happens - as you implied - it makes me cringe. I would love for Bindi to have her own nature series and push like her dad to save the environment. After all, the world needs more people like Steve Irwin. Now that he's gone, his daughter may be the closest we can get.

What bugs me is that everything Bindi's involved with now seems to have little to do with animals - or at least not as much as I suppose her parents might want it to. This all feels to me like whoever's organising all of this is just using her acquired publicity and animal conservation as vessels for what would ultimately be their own plan.

I suppose your arguement's valid - that she's too young to really know what she's lending herself to (she's eight, actually) - but I find it hard to believe at times. The way she talks and behaves on television projects a lot of maturity. She doesn't seem to get distracted or sidetracked like lots of children on television do, and she has this way with the camera and whoever she's talking to or being interviewed by.

On the other hand, she's no stranger to exposure. All the practice she must've gotten with Steve and all the public appearances from such a young age couldn't have gone to waste. Her first television appearance took place in 1999 when she was just two years old, and in September this year she appeared on the cover of a popular Australian magazine. That made her the youngest person ever to do that, in all the hundred-and-four years of the magazine's life. And I'd barter she's pretty into animals - her first crocodile hunting trip took place with the whole family when she was coming out of her toddler years.

She might regret all this weird stuff she's doing right now in a few years' time, but I don't think she'll need any help steering herself back onto her dad's path.

When I saw this post, I knew It was going to be for something like this..I don't really think it's right how's she's getting famous off her dads fame; If she was to become famous it should be in her own way; with animals(which would be great)! The fitness thing is uterly horrible; no offence.

And for an eight year old; she is one smart cookie.

She's smart.

That's for sure; or at least she seems smart.

And that's what I mean, that it'd be a shame to waste her on this sort of thing. She's earning money from her late father's fame in a field that he didn't even touch.

I'll see for myself how right or wrong I am tonight.

There's a five-day old edition of The Late Show With David Letterman screening tonight (that's about the delay we get down here for that programme) featuring Bindi Irwin and her weird dancing guys. I've read numerous articles speaking of how good she is, and that the whole thing's not as bad as it sounds.

It might surprise.

Did anyone else see that episode?

She didn't perform, but I'm still surprised.

Bindi seems really charismatic and bold for an eight-year-old. Definitely, she's a lot more talkative and comfortable in social situations than a lot of eight-year-olds I've met. She'll be alright.

Her performances, I still don't know. I swear I saw an ad that said she was going to sing on that show. But, well, she didn't. Maybe it was just a trick to get people to watch - I know it worked on me. I don't regret it, though.

And I'm pretty sure that wasn't just a trick of my mind. I talked about it with my friend the other day, he said the same thing.
