Okay, after seeing Crossroads of Destiny and hearing what the Guru had to say, I sort of began wondering whether or not Aang really has to be the only Avatar. I got the distinct impression that all people in this universe live according the reincarnation, and from what the Guru said, the only thing stopping people from bending all elements was blocked chakras.
Could it be that there are several levels of enlightenment it takes to become the Avatar? Maybe the Avatar is naturally gifted with clearer chakras, allowing for the bending of multiple elements, and his only challenge left is to master the Avatar state.
I think that maybe benders, also, are born with clearer chakras, allowing bending, than those without. If this is true, then anyone who went through enough meditation could learn to bend the elements and, if what the guru said is true, they could bend multiple elements and ultimately create several avatars (though they might not necessarily retain memories, as Aang does)
Or, if they're like the guru, who has cleared his chakras and still does not bend, it could also be that bending is a conscious choice.
I don't know, but this has been driving me nuts lately.

I look at it as both a spiritual and a Genetic thing. In order to manipulate the energy you need the mutation to do it thus one can be a spiritual bieng and not be able to bend such as the Guru.

Hmm... I hadn't thought of it that way before. So, not born a bender, never a bender.
Sometimes I look at this show and think "Two-thousand years from now, when this fictional world is far more advanced, will they study these things in detail, etc..."

exactly as shas said.
if youre not born with the gift to bend you cant bend. the ability is gifted to those lucky few. It has nothing to do with the chakras, clearing the chakras just helps you mentally.

Okay. But what about the theory of being able to control multiple elements? I've only seen the episode once, and I'm sure if I go back there'll be something to say it's impossible, but what if, through enough meditation, a bender could ultimately learn to control another element? I can't help wondering what sort of development that would open for characters like Jeong Jeong, who dislike their own elements and desperately wish for others.

No, they can't, because that's when the spirituality comes in with reincarnation.

exactly the avatar can bend all elements because he is a living incarnate of the earth itself.

See my theory stops the random distribution of Airbenders throught the Avatar univers.
