My parents and classmates think the exact same thing. Lolita isn't about dressing trampy or provocatively, but about wearing cute Victorian/Edwardian inspired dresses.

ok so im not sure if this was pointed out yet (there are so many long posts i wasnt gonna sit down and read them all o.0;; )

but lolita isnt smiled upon in japan either they still get made fun of just as much (as dumb as this might sound othello in the beginning where the two girls are following her and making fun of her and stuff isnt too far off from how it is being lolita in japan...)wow im quoting manga ._. thats odd.

so honestly the only diffrence is in japan its more common (even if it does only tend to come out certian days at certian places, theres still a rather mean unaccepting crowd and there will be no matter what country you live in

im not sure how well i worded that but oh man this guild was all nice and sweet when i joined but now it seems to be getting meaner by the second o.o;;

I think if lolita became a (more) mainstream thing, it would be marketed as sexy and fetishy. It's just about pretty clothes!
in my opinion, Americans should make up a less sexual name for lolitas so we aren't teased for it. Like, "neo-victorians" or "neo-roccocco". It's not accurate to the japanese style, but it's worth it.

That would work well but I doubt it would stick. I would be tempted to do that myself that way no one could make the mistake of thinking lolita is sexual. To be honest it's just a style which is about looking cute or doll like inspired by dresses in the edwardian era more so then the victorian but still a little of the later. It's easy to see why people get it confused though.

I don't think it's just "evil America" that doesn't get the fashion. neutral

The issue that Americans face with dressing Lolita is just a general misconception of what is acceptable. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with wanting to dress up and look nice all the time, in fact I would encourage my children to dress that way as well if they wanted, but because of things like kiddie porn the fashion has been distorted. Essentially the thought process is that if an older woman or girl dresses in cute clothing that she is trying to appeal to an older man's ideal of a little girl, therefor wanting to take advantage of him, therefor wanting to have sex with him. It's a messed up process but that seems to me how the connection works.

Our society has changed since the times where it was acceptable to wear such adorable clothing. Not to say that's a bad thing; the world has changed for the better in many ways, but fashion doesn't always stay still. I quite agree with others in this thread; wearing very short skirts and hardly anything up top isn't very appealing, but it's more more overtly sexual and attention getting and also, sadly, very accepted. I think here that the more overtly sexual a girl is the more accepted she'll be whereas with Lolita's, its not quite clear if she's being sexual or not and because it's not clear she must be up to something.

Now just because people think this way doesn't give them an excuse to call Lolitas sluts and the like. In fact I don't think there's ever really an excuse to call anyone that. Of course when you're called that it's hard to deal with but I think as Lolitas we need to take it with a grain of salt and only reply sweetly to those who call us such. It takes a lot of guts to be nice to someone who was been mean to you and even though you may be hurt, being polite will win over more people than criticizing others just because they called down on you.

So as American Lolitas I think we need to accurately display our fashion by not only dressing appropriate to our 'brand' of Lolita but by also acting the part. We may never reach a main-stream status and, really, who wants to be main-stream anyways, but it will bring a new meaning to the term Lolita. Lolita is a fashion as well as a lifestyle and we should be prepared to represent it no matter what we wear or where we go. It'll bring it a better name and people wont be so apt to judge all Lolitas as sluts anymore.

[/two cents ^^]

Ummmm... I don't know how practical this is to most of you but at my college.... if there's a question or statement about an idea/style/way of life.... the group in question generally hands out pamphlets and various other information media to students to inform and correct assumptions... I know it's not practical to many of you but you could print out some of the guilds FAQ info out... I.E. life style info and dress style outlines.... and hand them out to the uninformed who insult or question you.... then perhaps state that when they can present a pertinent argument as to why traditional Lolita is bad they seek you out again (or at least demand they ask intelligent questions about Lolita...... once they ACTUALY research it via some of the included info pages included with the info.) sweatdrop 3nodding whee 4laugh

I'm afraid to say I cannot convince my dad that Lolita is not a fetish, and it is really starting to annoy me. I just want to hit him sometimes!!! evil I mean, there is a difference between Lolita as a fashion and lolita porn, but no one seems to get that! >.<

Um... to meh, lolita is more about the clothes, and LESS about your body, while slutty clothes are the total opposite.
