i dunno what they're called, but there are certain types that are very nostalgic for me, that bring back (nonexistant) memories of some back-alley 3-man band, or a smokey, sleepy lounge from way back when, or a suite in some hotel on the outskirts of a crime-ridden city... nahm saying? 'cause i don't think i do. i just know that like music that conjures up vivid imagery.

I get a huge kick out of modern jazz. The weirder, the better, as long as it's tight and there's some underlying logic to it.

I listen to alot of ska jazz. The groove of ska is just plain addicting. I can't even describe it...first wave (roots) and second wave (two-tone) ska is rooted in reggae, and third wave is more related to the blues. Some people insist that there is a fourth wave, but most people disagree with this, because there is only one ska band right now (Streetlight Manifesto) that is "fourth wave", and that's because of the singer/guitar player/songwriter; he has an incomprehensible amount of musical influences that give his music a totally different sound from his contemporaries. Others have tried to imitate it......and failed.........badly.......I would highly recommend The Toasters to all of you. Try to listen to something off of their Dub 56, Hard Band for Dead, or New York Fever albums. That's their best stuff from the 80's and 90's. Give it a chance. Like any other musician, they have some songs that are bad, but 95% of them are good. *thumbs up* biggrin
