Hey cember, I understand his his frustration honestly. It's not that he generally has anything against altos so much as in that group the altos tend to have loads of people not taking it seriously. If you want your section to get some cred. get them to get with the freaking program >.<. It's annoying for the rest of us who don't get to work when you and like 4 other people in your sectionare the only altos working so he takes just about the whole block trying to convince you guys to join us on planet earth. It's like you seems to have habit of being the section going " Oh dear I joined choir but I just hate to sing *whines*" (several people not the whole section mind you)

My director has a bass and tenor fetish. It's really creepy. She could care less about the girls (that is sopranos included) but she drools over the guys!

My alto friends and I make sure we don't get abused. biggrin We hang out any make fun of the director all the time. It's some good times.

My old director at the other choir I sang at though, man, she only gave solos to sopranos for about four years. If you were an alto, forget it! Quite depressing...

It's not really abuse but our choir teacher always said this one joke everytime we altoes complained about a high note:

"How many altoes does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
One to screw in the lightbulb and the rest to complain about how high it is"

it always made me laugh

*cracks up*, I love section specific jokes, like even the one in the thread I made about soprano jokes is pretty freaking funny, if I think about it really

My teacher and sopranos always tend to act that way too towards the poor altos too.

Thats why I hate that I got chosen to be one this semester.

You can just tell yourself the only reason the people who are sopranos are sopranos is it's because they're too stupid to keep and sing the harmony. 3nodding

see... in my choir, sopranos frequently get very complex passages, more frequently than the altos do, actually. In many of the selections we sing, the melody is passed through all the voice parts. Our professor is usually much harder on the sopranos than she is on anyone else.

Most of the female vocal performance students (as in they're getting their b.mus in vocal performance) are sopranos simply because they have learned how to use their upper ranges. There are a few who are placed as altos simply because we have a very rich lower range.

In my choir at least, voice placement has everything to do with vocal range and colour, and how well different voices blend together in each section. Overall, I'd say our prof is very adept at making good placements.

I still have to say though that a lot of our altos are actually sopranos who lack the confidence to support their voices properly and actually sound good through the higher passages. I was surprised tonight at rehearsal when there were a few altos complaining about having to sing a high e flat...

Me being an alto, I find it easy to sing the higher notes like a first sop. In fact while our Sopranos practice, there I am singing along quietly and all my altoes are like "Tell me again WHY you're an alto??" I've been given the nickname "Sopralto" lol

a good piece needs to have all parts working in harmony (the level of peace, not the music part) ^^

See, I'm having the opposite problem of all of you. Two of the sopranos in my small choir didn't return to school this year, so we had five altos and two sopranos. Not very good balance, especially since one of our altos is a major belter. My voice instructor has been working on my higher range, so my director moved me up to second soprano, but I still have to reach up to the occasional A, which isn't easy when you've been singing alto all of your life. I miss being an alto. I loved being the middle part and finding the harmonies in the middle. Technically, my voice is a mezzo, so I'm not really a true soprano or alto, I'm somewhere in the middle, so I go wherever I'm needed, which is Soprano in my school choirs and alto for my church's choir.

And, I will admit that the music that we do in my choirs is not exactly difficult, our music program is still very young and we're building it up slowly, but singing soprano is a lot easier than alto, excpet for the high notes, but I've gotten better at those. It takes me no time at all to learn and memorize a song now, I had to put a lot more effort into it when I was an alto.

And my director usually yells at the basses. It's deserved though.

like I said, get the altos to get with the program and you would be just as loved, but there are many unactive altos in that section >.< ( during the vote today and bunch whined when they didn't get the piece they wanted, and it's like " what do you care, your not DOING the piece anyway lazy asses")

Oh, you mean I don't get to abuse the altos in the section at my old school?

Dammit. They could've used some abuse. They didn't even try half of the time.

Most people don't understand that what part you are depends on where your voice sounds richest. You can have a range as big as Texas, but if your voice sounds richer when you're in the alto range, then you're an alto.
