The Iroquois Confederacy was a group of several Native American tribes that banded together for protection. These tribes were the Mohawks, the Oneidas, the Onondagas, the Cayugas, and the Senecas. The Tuscarora joined later. They inhabited what is now upstate New York, as well as some of Ontario and Quebec.
The Iroquois League was governed by a constitution known as the Gayanashagowa, or “Great Law of Peace.” According to oral tradition, this was composed in the 1100’s. The five original tribes fought regulary amongst one another until two prophets, Ayonwentah and Deganawidah, united them. The last tribe to be converted was the Onondaga, and their cheiftan Todadaho. He did convert, however and became the spiritual leader of the Iroquois.
The leader of the nation is still called Tododaho to this day, and sits with the Onondaga in council, although he is chosen by all the tribes. The current Todadaho is Sid Hill of the Onondaga. There are fifty chiefs in all, including the Todadaho. The tribes are represented as follows:
Onondaga: 14
Cayuga: 10
Oneida: 9
Mohawk: 9
Seneca: 8
Tuscarora: 0
These numbers have never changed. These representatives are generally chosen by the matriarchs of the tribe, and then sent to the Grand Council. The Grand Council makes decisions for the entire Nation.
After the American Revolution, the Iroquois moved to Canada, because most fought on the side of the British. However, they did sign a treaty with the new nation, and some of the Iroquois nations now have land in New York. All of the tribes still gather in the Grand Council.
