"Some new rehab s**t. My parents heard about it from my doctor, he said it was some great new rehab that was trying new ways to get people 'back on their feet.' So they decided to send me off two weeks before my birthday." She said, a twisted smile creasing her lips.

Chana winced in sympathy. "I think I remember a saying about something like that once. Something about the road to ruin being laid with good intentions and paved with well-meaning." The beaver shook her head again.

"If it's any consolation, most of us have left people behind. I remember another saying about misery loving company," she told the human with a small smile.

Shenzi's smile turned slightly crooked at the corners. "Very true. Still miss them though..." She trailed off, laying her chin on her knees, her arms loosely wrapped around her shins.

"So how long've you been here?"

"How long..." the beaver trailed off, looking thoughtful. How long ago had she heard about a Halloween celebration? (She knew an excuse to get drunk when she saw it, and was not about to take refuge in drink.)

"I think," she said slowly, "I think I've been here for a year now."

Well. There was a realization. And a very scary one at that. Chana paled beneath her fur.

Shenzi, who was already fairly pale, went white. "A year? Has no one ever left? Escaped?" s**t, this was really gonna suck. Majorly. "Has anyone been here longer then that?" She asked, standing up and sliding into the deeper water again, floating on her back

"Yes, there are people who've been here longer. I think there were some who'd been here at least two or three months when I got here," she said, trying to remember back to those early days.

"And the only escape attempt I've ever heard about ended badly. I saw Awen after she'd tried to swim away. She was in a wheelchair for a while afterwards."

Chana swallowed. She didn't really want to think about a future of being trapped on this island. But if she wanted to function, she had to simply take each day as it came, and stop thinking about the future at all. It was the only way to survive, and the beaver was all for survival.

The blueberry paled further, if that was possible; her face was almost white as a sheet compared to the stark color of her hair. "What-What happened to her?" She asked hesitantly, not sure if she really wanted to know the answer or not.

Chana thought back.

"I think that she blacked out for some reason...and they got her then. She's a manta ray, if that helps," she added. "I'm sorry, I wish I could remember more." It was a shame that she couldn't be of more help to Shenzi, she really didn't want to let the other woman down so badly.

"Oh..." Plan dashed. Closing her eyes, she let herself float on the water, thinking. "s**t." Her accent was starting to bleed into her words, growing slowly noticeable. Generally, she hid it well enough, but when she was under stress or upset about something, the accent'd take over.

Chana didn't recognize the accent that was starting to color Shenzi's words, but she didn't want to be rude and ask. It could be taken the wrong way at this point.

The beaver began collecting her fishing gear. "Well, I don't want to continue to rain on your parade, Shenzi, so I think I should go find myself some already caught fish." She stood and looked back at the woman floating in the lake.

"If you'd like to find me, I'm usually in the river or in my duplex. Number 26," she offered.

Shenzi grinned at the latter part. "No luck with the fish then?" She flipped over onto her belly, letting her legs fall under the surface as she started lightly kicking to stay afloat. "Duplex 78, if you're ever bored." Shenzi said, a small, real smile lighting her face briefly as she gave the beaver-woman a small wave goodbye.

Chana started visibly at the number. 78? There were about eighty people being experimented on now? The beaver shuddered and continued on her way. She felt in need of comfort of some kind. She'd keep an eye out for Stewart...or just open her Torah and start reading. With her luck of late, it would be the Plaut.
