As everybody else has said, this character is border-line Sue. You'll be able to save her, though, as long as she doesn't angst constantly about her past (which, from what I see from her personality description, she won't) you'll be alright.
I like the idea of the otter-people. The fact that she's near-blind counteracts the Sue, too, but how does she dance? Is it something her people can do from birth, or did she learn when she could see?

She has soem vision, but it's very fuzzy and blurry. But when she was first learning, her vision was slightly better, but she also had a teacher who wasn't afraid to walk up, grab her arms, kick at her ankles and go, "No, like this!" *move limb where it should be*

I see.
Well, I would certainly learn to dance if I was whacked every time I got something wrong.

Ohhh I really like how this is coming along. The history is very full and complicated and I really really like that. Some other people were saying Mary-sue but it seems you've worked away from that. My only confusion was the "seductive" dances. She seems sort of... modest? And yet this dance sounds really provacative. Is this an oversight? Is there a change that goes on when she gets on stage?
I also really like that you worked her changes into this and are allowing for a whole lot of growth. 3nodding

Basically, the purpose of the slave Dancers was to dance before a crowd of horny, drunk and violent males... XD So, it is somethign she knows, that she does. But it isn't who she is, if that makes any sense. =3
Truth be told, she'd rather focus on the ritual and story-telling dances, but she knows the other will mean more money for her and for the Cirque.

I think it's looking great! To add to what Dahli said, if she was trained and danced in situations like that often enough she may have a very lassie faire attitude about being sexy or seductive in behavior. It may be something she is simply used to.
It's very VERY difficult to stay modest when you've been trained against it. It's a type of desensitizing thing that basically can break down the personality of a person. (like seeing violence on TV can make us less sensitive to it)
Just a thought to keep in mind. biggrin

Oh, I agree. But, it is possible to kep the two aspects separate and still have it work. I actually went to school with a stripper/exotic dancer and she was very soft-spoken and girl next door. No one believed her when she told us what she did for a living.. XD
