It's my ninth grade year. I'm playing clarinet now, but I'm thinking of switching to oboe because we need one. If I do, I'll have an oboe solo in one of the pieces we're playing, which is entitled The Eighth Candle. I'm excited, yet scared, because I WILL be playing oboe if my band director allows me.

won't you technically have a solo in every piece considering you'd be the only oboe??? lol, sorry j/k but that'd be so kool. I wish I could have a solo but I don't ever get them. Being Second Chair Trombone is no fun. I remember when I was first chair. I got solos all the time. The first time I was really really nervous. but I never once messed up and I was thrilled beyond explanation. Good luck to you

Oboe is most definitely cooler. You'll have way less competition with it.

Agh this SUCKS! My band director won't allow me to play oboe because I'm "too valuable to the clarinets". >> Rawr.

Lol, that sucks sorry kid. I was pulled from the Clairinet section becasue I was the only one who would be valuable to the Horn section.. Needless to say I used to be a clairinet.. What does this have to do with you though?lol

We're just starting symphonic band in two weeks. This week is the week of auditions, I'm scared. XD I've never switched my instrument. Always played tenor sax and always will I guess. 3nodding

I just switched from clarinet to a double reed (bassoon), too! We have kind of a lot of clarinets compared to the size of our band so yeah. I'm kinda nervous, too, but it's gonna be a while until I have an actual performance where I play bassoon (whew!)

i always wondered what oboe was cause whenever we had a bells part but didn't have the right music, the director would give us the oboe music to read. I've been in concert band for three years now and i think it rocks cause you can play all the funny little instruments in percussion....... yes i am a percussionist but i want to learn to play flute trumpet and the sax. YAY!!!! heart

Yeah, I doubt my band director would let me switch from flute.... but it would be awesome to play oboe.

I'm fourth chair in my clarinet section, so I highly doubt that I could switch right now. I have a lot of friends in the flute section, so I've actually gotten myself to be able to play the flute too (even though I don't know any fingerings XP), and THAT is an instrument switch.

Hey! bd_emo? Every band needs an oboe. Oboes are the sexiest instrument of them all. Not really, and they sound like dying ducks. But if you play them right... Awesome sound, so unique, and there's nothing like playing an oboe. Go for it, Fever~

If I were you, I would stay with clarinet no matter what. You already know it well. In my band, there is only one oboe.
