Zizzykitty Faith-on-Fire Zizzykitty Faith-on-Fire Zizzykitty Do not get me started on grammer though. I have pretty good grammer most of the time but I still mess up because I never pay attention in english so most of the stuff I know about grammer came from reading. (and lectures from my mother when I majorly mess my grammer) I never was good at grammer. Honestly, a grammer fanatic could put a gun to my head and say, "Identify the adverb of this sentence or I will shoot you." My response would be, "Just shoot me. I don't know what an adverb is or how to identify one!"
You would think that after seven or eight years of having grammer drilled into my head I would know it. But, every time we do prepositions...GREAT! I can do prepositions. We go to adjectives...Great! I can do adjectives. But, wait?...How do I do prepositions again?
Strangely enough, in Honors English we don't do grammer. Thank God!Same thing with me. i know if something doesn't sound right like double negatives annoy the hell out of me, but the same thing with identifying parts of speech or if someone gives me a sentence and asks me if it's wrong and whats wrong with it I'm just kinda like "I don't know! It just sounds wrong okay?" I'm not in honors english but we aren't really doing grammer either. We did a bit on parts of speech but thats about it. Sweet. The regular English classes at my school are drowning with grammer exercises...at least the freshman class is. In our Honors class, we only do literature and essays. To many darn essays this year. xp that't why I didn't want honers enlgish. I hate oen of the honers english teachers 'cause I had her before in a different grade and also I hate writing essays. I love my Honors classes! These past two years, its been fun because it has been really easy to get my teachers distracted. My Freshman teacher loves to just ramble about nothing and everything. My Sophomore teacher loves to tease certain students and they will eventually end up in some sort of really amusing arguement.

Battousai-nii People used to tease me all the time for using words like "quite," "rather," and "certainly" which I have picked up from reading older literature.
I use words such as these in everyday sentences.. as well as my best friend. My mother feels proud for some reason because I use good grammar when speaking. It's rather embarrassing. xp I was born into a southern styled family, so naturally, they all use the slang. I found myself, after joking around with my mother, confessing my burning dislike for (thick) southern accents... and then it was an all out brawl. T___T

'Gracious', 'deuce', 'thus', 'rather', 'jolly' and 'gay' do tend to slip into my speech on a regular basis. I love the way they sound, though, so if I receive queer looks because of their use it won't bother me too much. Oh, and 'queer', of course! I adore that word beyond measure.
But this is not the only reason that I receive funny stares when it comes to the matter of speech. I am also very fond of long, old, difficult and outlandish words altogether. I often find myself using words such as 'sesquipedalian' or 'to rindle' and then having to explain myself in order for people to understand.

Splendid... I find you absolutely adorable! I enjoy talking like that, and I most certainly know that I can not speak any other way. Quite a few of my friends use slang when talking or typing, but I can't bring myself to do it. My family, too, say things such as "ain't" and they seem to slur words together quickly, causing me to giggle. whee

I cannot speak any other way, either. But I think it's even stranger to use such elaborate English speech for me because English isn't my native tongue or even my second language. I'm Dutch, you see. Either way, slang and chat speak annoy me horribly. I'm quite proud to say I've never used such abominable speech in my life.
People ought to appreciate the marvels of the English language more. There's such amazing words to be found. I mean, take the verb 'to defenestrate'. In what other language could you possibly find a word which describes the action of pushing someone out of a window?

I always use proper grammar and notice when others fail to do so in their speech and their writing. I don't look down on people with poor grammar; I simply cannot help but notice. I have a very extensive vocabulary and I used to use it constantly in my speech, but as a child none of my peers knew what I saying. I resisted "dumbing down" my speech for years, thinking I shouldn't have to change because other people are stupid, but eventually I spoke a bit more "normally" since I realised it would be ridiculous to speak in a way that caused me to fail to get my point acrossed. Like many of you, I too use words in their original context sometimes, and don't use EVER use slang...Well, except for "cool," but I can forgive myself for that.

You find the best friends when you read a lot. One of my friends is a grammar Nazi: even if you text in text speak she'll reprimand you.
But I always had the problem of mispronouncing words I learned too. It wasn't a total loss. People would ask me what I meant and I proved I knew what I was talking about by saying the definition. biggrin

I often find myself re-arranging sentences in my head before uttering them when I'm with some of my friends who are a bit less well-read, because I'm certain that they won't understand the meaning otherwise. When I do so, I often feel a bit ridiculous. But I love the way I speak. I love my eloquence and my meticulous grammar. And I do not mind editing my speech a little when I know I'm around people that have a limited vocabulary in comparison to mine, but I will not change my habits altogether.
Once upon a time, my situation was even more extreme than it is now; I tended to refuse to use contractions such as 'don't' and 'shan't'. I've overcome that tendancy by now. =]

Zizzykitty I feel out of place at my school sometimes because I have never heard anyone else except me and one of my freiends use quite.
It's the same way where I am... gonk I say 'quite' all the time but it's just natural for me. xD
I enjoy using old words. :[

Ah... See, here's where I have problems.
I pick up words way too easily, therefore my speech is and eclectic mix of old English and modern slang. My English teacher loves it, she thinks its hilarious. For some reason though, it tends to disappear when I write. Does that happen to anyone else? That you write completely differently from how you talk?
Oh well, at least it expands my vocabulary somewhat! My friends and my brother hate me for it mostly. I never dumb down my speech - I just got used to translating when that oh-so-familiar confusion crosses their faces. I'm so used to it in fact that its become mundane, whereas I used to find it amusing!
In national school I was jibed terribly for my speech, and my accent. Y'know, words like 'vase' and 'book', which I pronounce in a way that I find pleasing to the ear, not how everybody thinks I should pronounce them. People would tell my I was posh for rounding my vowels too much, but now I don't really care. I come from a town where everyone pronounces the 'ah' sound through their noses - a problem when the towns names is predominantly composed of that sound - and I think in those circumstances its no shame to stand out!
Of course, a good vocabulary isn't always a good thing. For a project recently I was told to write a page, when all we needed was a paragraph. Although we didn't really have the space for it, my whole page had to be put in, because there was nothing that could be taken out of it really, it was - excuse my boastfulness - 'too well written'. Then I was accused of coping directly from the internet, which I denied vehemently, and eventually I was assigned another - long - article to write. I was supposed to be on a doss year! I'd never felt so gosh-darned stressed!

Dragon_Fire1995 I always seem to pick up words aswell. I picked up the word 'one' used as a varity of persons, such as 'I do not try to stop it, for one belives in what one belives in, and no one can change that.' I do that all the time. I use it in my writing too for as long as I could remember.

Yes I do it constantly. I talk like an educated person to adults and they think i'm using cheek! It's like students can't speak like they are smart anymore!
