While I still believe that Dharma brought bears of some kind to the island, we now know that the island that animals were kept on is not the island that the lostaways are stranded on. I know polar bears are decent swimmers, but then again, I don't know how far apart the two islands are.
Ethan said something about getting there in a day by swimming, didn't he? I think it's safe to say the Polar bears would swim across.
I just can't understand why Polar bears specifically? Unless that's what they call an "easter egg" since there was a Polar bear in the comic book Walt read?
Well, I think it has to do with a Polar Bear's personality. If what Baulfret said is true, they were probably trying to "tame" Polar Bears, which is a pretty lofty goal. I'm an Animal Planet freak and I also had a roommate who lived in Alaska, and I'll tell you that Polar Bears are very aggressive. They're more dangerous than any other kind of bear, because they will actively hunt humans for food just as they would any other animal, and they're very persistent. This makes me think the Dharma Initiative was trying to find a way to make these ferocious bears less dangerous or possibly use that danger to their advantage.
...The comic book is definitely connected too, I bet.
