"Warm Realization."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

She hadn't realized it at first. How easy her life had been until it was gone. The snow that is. That beautiful white wonderland was gone, the world as she had knew it vanishing with the melting snow. Ice blue eyes started out her bedroom window as the beautiful spring green grass. Well to her, the color was ugly. She hated green more than anything. It was everywhere.

Taking in a deep breath, she let it out as she sighed a thin frost covering the window pane before it evaporated. It was too warm. Even her body was starting to notice the weather change. With the winter weather, spring was trying to melt her. Or at least her hair, hair that was always in a constant drip. No longer did it jut out the back of her head, but turn into downward spirals.

She hated it. Spring...

Shuddering, Shayla rose up to her feet with another sigh. She was bored. Going out in the warm weather only made her feel tired and lethargic. It was as if all her energy melted away in the sun shine. Mostly because, unknown to her, it does.

Silently she made her way down the stairs, taking each one carefully. Even now she found herself sleepy but too awake to sleep. If it had been winter still, she knew she'd be out there playing in the snow. But now, it was much to hard for her to create snow let alone play with it after. She didn't even think she could remember how to do it now...

Rounding the corner, she quickly noted her father sleeping on the couch. She wanted to wake him but knew better. The man barely slept due to her little brother screaming in the middle of the night. For a baby, he had a good set of lungs. Sighing, she quickly walked past him and into the kitchen. She wanted ice to cool herself down, but...

Glassy eyes looked up at the freezer. There was no way she could reach that. Moving close to the fridge, she attempted to raise up on tip to and reach. Though she came up just short. "Tch...." Now what...

"What are you doing pipsqueak?"

Quickly, Shayla turned and looked at Rudyard. A small blush appeared across her face, followed with a pout. "I wanted some ice... But Daddy is sleeping." She explained, watching the feien crouch on top of the counter.

"Uuuuh-huh. Probably wise not to wake the big blue giant. But why do you want ice for?"

"To make me colder 'cause I'm melting... Daddy said it..." She paused, searching for the right words. "Cools my insides... And then I won't melt no more. I'm tired of the drippy drip."

"Ah... Well kiddo I can't help ya. Go wake your Dad. But it's just too bad you can't just stop melting on your own. Something like that should have been right up your alley, eh kid?" He muttered, taking off into the air and flying out of the room.

Shayla frowned at that. Rudyard... He had a point. Reaching up she'd touch one of the melting curls, freezing the liquid in place. She knew it wouldn't last long... But... Lifting her arm she looked at her locket. That ice never melted no matter how warm it was. Shayla had almost been bald once and yet the locket remained incased in ice.

"There's ... gotta be something.." She muttered to herself. Something she could do. But what?

Shaking that thought from her mind, she once more took a peek out at her father. Not really wanting to wake the man another idea formed in her head. Stepping over to a chair, she grasped it with both hands and began to drag it over the kitchen floor. Silently she cursed at the screeching sounds it made and immediately she stopped.

That wasn't going to work. Surly that would-

"Shayla..." A groggy voice came from behind. One that belong to her father.

Turning, Shayla looked at the older man and smiled softly. "Hi Daddy.... Did I wake you?"

"Yes... You did. What are you doing dragging the chair across the kitchen?"

"Well.. I wanted to get ice.... You were sleepin' and I didn't wanna wake you up... 'cause I know you want to sleep."

"I told you before, when you want ice just come and ask me. Even if I'm sleeping." Stating that, the man moved to get a tall clean glass before opening the freezer.

Shayla moved a little closer, smiling at the cool breeze it created. Being handed the glass once ice was inside, Shayla muttered a small thank you with a piece being shoved into her mouth. Crunching it quickly, ice eyes looked up at her father.

"Daddy.... Why do I melt?"

Jason just shrugged a bit while moving the chair back to the table. "I don’t know Shayla.. But I'll put the air conditioner in your room now since I'm awake. It'll blow nice cold air into your room all day and night if you want. Well... Not all the time or you'll make my electric bill sky high."

Shayla just stared at Jason, giving a faint nod. Half of what he said she didn't understand but it didn't matter. Whatever Daddy said was ok, right? Smiling, she shoved another piece of ice into her mouth before heading out into the living room. Gently she laid on the couch, putting the glass of ice against her forehead.

"Something..." She muttered to herself. She'd have to figure out something.

"Chilling Boredom."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Several hours and many cups of ice later, Shayla still fond herself bored and melting. Little feet kicked up at the air as her mind tried to freeze around the concept of ice. For her, that was quite the challenge. How could something so simple like ice be so hard to understand?

Groaning, she pulled herself up to her feet. Having skipped dinner, she now found herself hungry since the temperature dropped. Yay for the sun setting. Her appetite was back and tummy growling. Silently she moved towards the kitchen, peeking in to see her Daddy still doing the dishes. Score.

"Daaaady." She muttered, strolling in with her hands behind her back. Yeah, she was trying to put on a sweet act. "Can I have my dinner now Daddy? I'm hungry." Gently, those arms came around from her back to latch onto a leather pant leg.

Jason just laughed a bit as he looked down at his daughter. Smiling he gave a faint nod, "How can I say no to that? Go sit at the table and I'll warm it up for you."

"No Daddy, I'll eat it cold."

"You sure? It might not taste as good cold."

"I'm sure.... I dun want no warm food right now. Cold is ok..."

Jason watched as his daughter stepped away and moved to the table. He couldn't help but wonder if she was like himself. Though, the opposite. If he could channel heat into his body, perhaps she could.... No. She's much to young to comprehend something like that. Shaking his head, he put that in the back of his mind while moving to get her dinner.

"You know Shayla," he started, putting the plate down in front of the child. "Spring is almost here. Isn't that exciting?"

"No."

"No? Why not?"

"Everything is ugly and green. I dun like green... Green and brown are ugly colors."

Jason laughed a bit, turning to get the child a glass of ice water. "Ugly huh?" Pausing, he could understand why the child didn't like the colors. For the first part of her life everything was white. To her that must have been a perfect world. "What about the flowers?" He asked, setting the glass down for the girl. "They'll be blooming soon."

"Hmm..." Shayla took a fork full of peas and shoved them into her mouth while speaking. "Yah... Flowers ok. But green is ugly. I want winter back Daddy. When will winter be again?"

Frowning a bit, he hardly wanted to disappoint his child as he stated. "Not for another 300 days at least. I'll get you a calendar later. But I did put the Air Conditioner in the room while you napped on the couch It should be rather cold up there by now."

"Mm..." Shayla nodded, not really to sure what the Air Conditioner was. Oh well, she'd know when she went upstairs. "Daddy... Why does Spring have to be so warm?"

"For the flowers. So they can grow again. You see all winter they were sleeping, and now it's time for them to wake up. Don't you want to see the pretty flowers?"

Shayla shrugged.

"Well.... I will say this." He stated, watching the girl shove more food into her mouth. "You'll need to learn how to deal with the temperature change. We're just starting Spring and Summer is going to get hotter. Almost twice as hot."

Shayla choked on her food for a moment, glancing up at Jay. "Lots more hot? But..." Surely when her father first told her about the weather change she didn't quite imagine this! Whining, the fork poked at the remaining food upon her plate. Suddenly she wasn't so hungry anymore.

Gently pushing the plate away, the small child slipped from the chair to get to her feet. "Thank you Daddy.... But I want to go to my room now... I think I want to sleep."

Jason nodded. "Of course. Just don't touch the AC ok? It's in the window and I don't want it falling out or on you. Though, keep the door shut. It'll keep your room nice and cold. Night pumpkin."

"OK Daddy." Flashing one more smiled to the man, she was quick to retreat up to her room. Though, much to her surprise the room was rather frigid. Absolute bliss. "Cold.." She whispered, a rather large smile coming onto her face as she shut her door. Just like daddy had said, the room was cold and comfortable.

Shivering, her body quickly adjusted to the room temperature. Giggling, she hopped up onto her bed and snuggled into the chilled sheets. Before she even knew it, she was asleep.

"Frozen Temptation."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Like most little girls, Shayla too had dreams. There in her dream was a palace, made of ice and snow of course. It was absolutely beautiful and breath taking in the moon light. Most important, it belonged to no one but herself. Many times she had visited this place once she was asleep. Her castle of dreams.

Elegantly she made her way down the carpet of snow, strolling right up to the front gates. There she was greeted by a funny looking man. He was blue from head to toe and covered in snow. Jack, that was the name she called him every time the two met. He in turn, would smile and bow, "Welcome home my Queen." He greeted, taking her hand so he could lead.

Once at the massive ball room, piano notes could be heard filling the hall with their invisible notes. She wasted no time in entering, wanting this to be the perfect evening. It was a party for herself after all, she better be there and resplendent.

Everyone in the room was dressed in whites and gold, spinning and twirling together with the music. As Shayla entered the room, everyone stopped and bowed their heads. Jack stepped to her side and gave a toothy little grin. "I do believe the King wishes a dance with you, my Queen. Come." Yes, her King. The man she had fallen in love with.

Catching a glimpse of this man out of the corner of her eyes, she began to turn and face him. Surely he was a handsome man, though Shayla was unable to see his face. Only seconds after turning around, screams erupted in the ball room. The castle was falling, melting away into nothingness.

"Daddy!" Shayla screamed, her crystalline dream nothing but ruins in the blink of an eye. This wasn't a dream, it was a nightmare. There, with everyone gone and the castle melted away, she sat in the vast empty ocean. Tears ran down her face as she continued to scream for her father, wanting to be rescued. Those calm ocean waves kicked up and began to shake her violently. Closing her eyes, she prayed for her father. He surely would save her.

And then, there he was.

Shayla opened her eyes as she was awoken from her dream. "Oh Daddy!" She cried, latching herself onto him. "Help me Daddy! I'm melting, melting! I don't want to melt away! Please Daddy, help me!"

"You're not melting. Shayla, stop crying..." Jason muttered, trying to clam his child down. "You were just having a bad dream.'

"A bad dream? So ... I not melting?"

"No, you're fine pumpkin." Gently, Jason picked the small girl up, cradling her in his lap. "Not one chunk of hair is out of place."

"Dat's cause... It's not hair Daddy. It's ice... And da ice is melting. Daddy... Why do I have ice for hair? Taji, Elazu, Ziya, Rizu and all da other kids have soft hair. I have wet melting hair... Why?"

"That's just how things are. But, I bet you this Shayla. As you get older I'm sure you can have any hair that you want. But first, you need to master keeping cool."

"I'm very cold now Daddy..."

"Well that's because you're room is freezing. You can't have an AC attached to your hip the rest of your life.'

Shayla stared at her father, the man making absolutely no sense to her. "Oh..." She muttered, glancing around before looking up at the man again. "Daddy... If my room is freezing why are you not cold?"

"Because I have a special talent Shayla. I can increase my body heat by drawing on my H-" He paused, laughing as he shook his head. Yeah, she wouldn't understand that either. "Let's just say I can make my body hot when I need to. I'll explain more when you're older ok?"

"Okie Daddy..." Shayla fell silent for a moment, then spoke once more. "Hey Daddy. Do you think I can make me cold?"

"With no doubt. I know you can if you try hard enough."

"How Daddy?"

"I don't know how. That you'll have to figure out on your own. Now, are you going to ask me a million more questions or go back to sleep?"

"I go back to sleep Daddy..."

"Alright then." Gently, Jason tucked his little girl in. "Sweet dreams kiddo." Standing, the jay turned to leave, but was stopped with little words.

"Daddy wait. If I have a bad dream again, will you come save me?"

"Of course I will. I'm you're Daddy aren't I?" A soft smile was flashed at the girl. "Now go to sleep."

"Ok, good night Daddy. I love you."

"I love you too Shayla." And with that, Jason left her room.

Shayla only smiled as she turned over in bed. Right now she was really happy. More happy than she had ever been. She did love her Daddy lots. Little hands were lifted to rub at her eyes, the small child more or less wide awake now. Only when she pulled her hands away did she see her locket. It hung from her wrist, still froze in it's icy case. What was inside? She still didn't know. But tonight she was going to find out, one way or another.

Sitting up, she easily slipped the small bracelet from her wrist. Little fingers lifted the icy pendant up to her eyes, glancing it over before allowing the item to fall into her hands. Gently she clasped them together, pressing a little kiss to her thumbs. "Please... Let this work." She whispered. She had been able to control ice and snow, so this ice shouldn't be any different right?

Opening her hands, she wasn't at all surprised to see the ice unchanged. Blue eyes just closed, a small sigh being released. She could do this if she really wanted to. She could do it. She could..... Couldn't think of what to do. It had come so natural before, but now she couldn't even remember how to control the ice. How did she do it before? "Hmm..."

When she controlled ice before, she had just pictured what she wanted in her mind then BOOM. There it was. But with winter, it just came so natural. Now what she wanted she found was almost utterly impossible to make. It was too warm and she couldn't even stop her hair from melting. Maybe she just needed to go back to basics.

Closing her eyes, she began to imagine it. The golden locket incased in ice. When her mind held the image, she began to tug the ice. Little by little it freed it's golden prisoner. Once the ice was removed, in her mind she molded a heart of ice. There, it was that simple right?

Blue eyes opened, staring down intently at her hands. Minutes would pass, and with concentration it did finally begin to work. Much to her surprise of course. Though there it was, the separation of ice and gold. Surely the heart of ice was more like an oval, but either was she had done it.

Gently picking up the ice crystal first, she held it to her eyes and inspected it. Without the gold, it looked much like a shiny stone. Either way, it was beautiful and cold! Yes, very cold. Gently the little gem was pressed to her forehead, a sudden cool rush surging through her body. It was like a buzz, her own personal air conditioner stuck on her forehead.

After she adjusted to the sudden temperature change, her eyes once more focused on the golden locket. Yes, that was the goal after all. Finally she could see what was inside her prized locket. Gently the item was picked up into her hands, little fingers pinching in the right spot to open. With a little pop, the golden halves began to part.

This was it! Blue eyes widened in excitement as the locket fell open. Nothing. It was completely empty. That excited look vanished, replaced with one of disappointment. She had done all of that and for nothing. What was the point of the locket if nothing was to be found inside?!

Sighing, the small child decided it was in fact time to sleep again. Either that or she'd force herself to sleep. The little bracelet was slipped back around her wrist before she snuggled into her feather pillows. Even disappointed in the end, she at least achieved her goal. Too bad she didn't realize that herself.

- End.
