If the map is small there's no point spawning with a BR, it would be much easier to spawn kill people that way. Small maps should stick with SMG start, and large maps with BRs.
What do you consider a small map? Lockout?

Yes. Lockout, Warlock, Midship, Desolation, Beaver Creek, etc.
You just named a few MLG used maps my friend.
The SMG is a pathetic weapon unless dual wielded.
The BR is handy in almost every situation.
BR > SMG In my opinion.

I wouldn't exactly like getting
shot at from over 2 people
with a BR in a small map, and
I doubt you would either.

Besides, this thread isn't about
which you think is better, it's
which you think should be a
starter weapon. It wouldn't make
sense to spawn with a BR in Lockout
or Midship.

Plus Halo 2 reg. matchmaking is
not MLG, so there's no reason to
bring the skill of MLG to regular
xbox live matchmaking.

Usually if you spawn with BR in Matchmaking it's either Team Hardcore or Team Slayer on a big map.
Hardcore is a playlist that requires a lot of skill in high levels.
Slayer is a Playlist that requires no skill especially in Lockout.
Lockout: One team spawns Lift/Portal/Blue, the other spawns BR Tower. The team at BR Tower can easily pick up a BR, shoot down the barrels at Snipe 3 and grab the snipe, now controlling the entire map with a Sword at hand from Sword Spawn.
The other team i at an unbelievable disadvantage and can't win unless the other team has poor aim and bad tactics.
If you play on Hardcore Lockout no matter what spawn you get you can get easy control on the map even if the other team gets Sniper Rifle and Sword at BR Tower due to the BR doing amazing at all ranges.
BR SPAWN > SMG SPAWN
((Also Team Hardcore is inm Matchmaking and that is MLG settings. ^^))

Just because Team Hardcore is similar to MLG, that does not mean every Halo 2 matchmaking is.
And if Slayer required no skill then so many people would be much higher levels.
Besides, it's Hardcore for a reason. Just because HC has BRs does not mean every game should, that's why they are seperate games. If no one wants to spawn with an SMG, play Hardcore, otherwise leave the other games alone, because if you change those then it's practically the exact same thing as Hardcore except with a motion sensor.

The SMG removes any balance that bungie tried to give multiplayer games due to its ability to be dual wielded. The combinations added surprise and more challenge leading to more risk when hunting an enemy. For a well balanced game I'd choose the Battle Rifle since its both a fair close range and medium range weapon, much like the pistol from Halo 1.

The least Bungie could do is make it SMG secondary with BR.
The SMG is simply unbalanced anyway you put it.
:/
I'm not gonna answer back to whatever post you put because I simply hate intarnatz arguements.

there both so good but it all depends on the maps and how the game is and everything slayer on big levels brs capture the flag on small levels smg

Honestly, SMG are just like pellet guns you can really kill someone with them head on. Unless you both have smg's or if you beat him down at the end.
But the BR now thats a better weapon, more powerful, alot more accuarate, and has a better range.

So I prefer BR, but other people might have some other opinions.

thats why I mostly play Team Hardcore

when you say high level what do you mean... level 30+ or level 40+ if you say level 40 then most people cant get there since there all standbyers and moders and kids who do what ever it takes to win.. 30+ is too easy to get since the people who play at that level are terrible if you get a sniper(free 12 kills) since they have smg's that do nothing whats so ever. in hardcore the vast majority of players are around level 20-28 after that you NEED a team or you play with well known people who have reputation of being really good. so tell me y is it so difficult to level in hardcore and so easy to level in slayer.....
