This has bothered me for a while now... Maybe what happened was that Lemony wrote about it there at first and after a while he forgot...
And then when the book was published he read it through and thought... "Oh, crap, I forgot about the hospital gown! gonk ... Hmm... Maybe no one will notice... ninja "

He may have meant to say that the robe was put on over her clothing.
Also, he happens to be human and those there humans tend to make mistakes.
