AUG.30 (JAPAN) Woman questioned after driving onto runway at Obihiro Airport OBIHIRO, Hokkaido -- A woman was taken into custody after driving onto the runway of an airport here Tuesday afternoon, police said. Local police are questioning the woman, whose name was not immediately disclosed, on suspicion of trespassing. The incident forced the airport administration office to close the runway for some 30 minutes, delaying a flight from Nagoya. At about 11:45 a.m., a car sneaked onto the grounds of Ohibiro Airport and drove back and forth across the runway before coming to a halt at one end, investigators said. Airport workers apprehended the woman driving the car and handed her over to police officers. The car sneaked into the airport through a cargo entrance that was left open and made its way onto the runway from Japan Airlines' cargo storage facility, airport officials said. Police arrest murdered hospital worker's son, friend WAKKANAI, Hokkaido -- Police investigating the murder of a hospital worker at her home here arrested her 16-year-old son and his 15-year-old friend on Tuesday on suspicion of murder, investigators said.
The two admitted to the allegations during questioning. "I was unhappy after my parents' divorce," the victim's son was quoted as telling investigators. The two boys, whose names are being withheld under the Juvenile Law, conspired to stab the 46-year-old victim in the neck and chest several times at about 10 p.m. on Sunday after she came out of the bathroom at her home, investigators said. The knife used in the murder has not been found. Local police began to question the youths immediately after they called a local fire station, reporting the incident and asking for an ambulance for the victim. They confessed to the murder after investigators noticed inconsistencies between their statements and the circumstances of the murder scene. The victim's son had initially told investigators that he saw a man with blond hair running away from his home, and the first-floor living room appeared to have been ransacked. Investigators suspect that the two attempted to cover up their involvement. The son had lived with her parents in Kanagawa Prefecture. However, after his parents divorced four years ago, the boy and his mother moved to Wakkanai, her hometown. Shortly after news organizations reported the murder of his mother, rumors that he might have been involved in the case spread through his high school. "He appeared gloomy. I often didn't know what he was thinking about," one of his classmates said. The two suspects were classmates at a junior high school and later entered separate high schools. (Mainichi)

19-year-old youth wanted for murder of student found strangled in laboratory
SHUNAN, Yamaguchi -- Police on Tuesday obtained an arrest warrant for a 19-year-old youth for murdering a technical college student who was found strangled in a laboratory here, police said. Local police have launched a manhunt for the youth who went missing immediately after the victim's body was found. His name is being withheld under the Juvenile Law. The victim has been identified as Ayumi Nakatani, 20, a student at Tokuyama College of Technology. Nakatani came to the college Monday morning with a 19-year-old student. They were supposed to have lunch together, but after Nakatani failed to show up the student began to look for her with a 26-year-old college employee. The employee found Nakatani lying face-up in the laboratory. Nothing was stolen and all the windows were locked. The professor in charge of the laboratory was on a business trip to Europe until Monday, and had given keys to the laboratory to a number of students who needed to use it to work on their theses.

Cops found 38 foreign victims of human trafficking in first half of 2006 Japanese authorities discovered 38 people in the first half of the year who were smuggled into the country to work in the sex and entertainment industries, a report said Tuesday. Independent groups estimate that the number of victims of human trafficking is far greater. The National Police Agency said 25 of the victims were Filipino, seven were Indonesian, five Taiwanese and one Thai, Kyodo News agency reported. The total was down from 51 reported In the first six months of 2006, Kyodo said. A night-duty officer at the NPA said he could not confirm the report because of the late hour. Kyodo said the 38 women were forced to work as hostesses in clubs or as prostitutes. Most of their passports had been taken by their employers and they were watched closely, it said. Twenty-six were taken into protective custody after they sought help from immigration offices or police, Kyodo said. It was not immediately known how the other victims were discovered. During the same period, police arrested 36 people in 32 human trafficking cases, the largest number since the NPA began keeping statistics in 2001, Kyodo said. A total of 29 people were arrested in the same period last year. The Switzerland-based International Organization for Migration estimates that as many as 150,000 trafficking victims could be working in Japan's sex industry. Activists say many women voluntarily but illegally enter Japan and are then saddled with exorbitant debts to their traffickers who enslave them to repay their travel fees. Earlier this year, Japan's Justice Ministry took steps to bar organized crime syndicates from sponsoring foreign singers and dancers entering the country on entertainment visas to clamp down on human trafficking. Many people using such visas end up as club hostesses or prostitutes. Under the ministry's measures, which took effect June 1, sponsoring companies must pay workers at least 200,000 yen per month. honestly i'm sort of scared and i feel stupid for saying this. I understand that the news is similar to our news, but for the longest time i've had this nieave view of Japan because i heard it had a low crime rate, but gonk i'm sorry i'm so...dumb. I just want to enjoy life without worrying about crime, or anthing. But that does not exsist anywhere in the world and i must face that fact and try to be carefull and enjoy my life and not worry so much about the problems of the world because...i can't do anything crying i apologize again.

Ototake sparks fiery online debate following comments on Princess Kiko
Ototake, whose book details his life with tetra-amelia, a congenital condition that left him with almost no arms or legs, saw his personal blog swamped with thousands of comments after he questioned why such a fuss was being made over the new Prince.
Ototake later issued an apology, saying he was "deeply, deeply apologetic" over the incident.
Ototake sparked the problem with a Sept. 7 entry about the new Prince.
"Ever since yesterday, people have been going on about what a celebratory event we've witnessed, but I've got to ask whether a single birth is all that much to celebrate? Or, are people really only celebrating because the baby was a boy?"
A reader responded by saying, "how pitiful that you can only take such a cynical view."
More comments critical of Ototake started pouring into his blog, with one reader demanding he "kowtow in apology to Princess Kiko and the baby."
But Ototake also received plenty of support for his stance. The online debate raged and by 4 p.m. Friday, Ototake had attracted over 800 comments.
Ototake responded to the uproar with a new blog entry titled: "I deeply apologize."
"Because I wrote an entry that wasn't as clear as it should have been, I've caused misunderstandings for many people and I apologize deeply for that. Please let me explain what I meant to say," the entry began. "Because my entry looked like I was saying that the birth of the new Prince was nothing to celebrate, I am deeply, deeply apologetic."
Ototake's apology only made the debate erupt with greater ferocity. As of 11 a.m. Saturday, he had attracted almost 2,400 comments about it. (Mainichi)

That Ototake thing is interesting. I just read about the new prince in the papers. I don't understand much about Japan's government, especially the imperial family, but it's interesting to see his comments made such a fuss. They would in U.S. too, if we had an emperor. As it is, Americans make almost as big a fuss over the English princes as the English do themselves. rofl
