Here's the article if you want to read it ^^; --> article
... but yes, the title is a bit... rude. stare (they make a reference to condom sales being down, so that might be why they titled it that.... that, and the title gets your attention. It's a newspaper/media thing. sweatdrop )

I know that in the US, the birthrate is also dropping. People here are also having fewer children. However, I don't think our population is dropping. We get immigrants from other countries to help supplement our population and keep it up. Many of our citizens (and laborers) come from Mexico. The funny thing is, is that we're trying to keep these Mexicans OUT of our country. It doesn't make sense. Because our citizens are having fewer children, our population would be theoretically dropping, and we need some way to replace those people, and also, because Mexicans are willing to do many jobs that the average American would turn their nose up at. These jobs are essential, like planting and harvesting crops. So...Why do we want to keep these people out, when in reality, we need them for both labor and population?

The point of having an increasing population, economically, is that the tax-paying workforce stays at a steady or increasing rate. Most of the mexican immigrants they are trying to keep out are the illegal immigrants that do not apply for citizenship... (a.k.a. don't pay taxes.) They are just taking jobs and money from the US without giving anything back to the economy. stare

Don't forget, in terms of sex and the economy, sex doesn't mean much if it is done for pleasure because no new babies will be born because of it. The issue in Japan isn't about how much young folks get busy and love hotels in Osaka are just as busy as any other time. The real issue is the social system that disurages new births.

Considering the average price of land, you really need two working parents. But according to Japanese traditions, the mother is basicly forced into retirement after child birth or turning 30, what ever comes first. Women with children are seen by the old farts the run the corporate world as "inefficent" and "not compident". Meanwhile, fathers wages are determined not by their job aptitude, but by how long they have been with a company. Since a pay starts out low and goes up slowly by year with no room for jumping ahead, its only natural that fathers would want to put off child birth until they reach a senior level that pays an appropriate living wage. Plus, the whole issue of non-existant maternity leave and lack of public daycare centers is a problem as well stressed

I've heard this, but it was in my Asian Studies textbook that was written in the 80s'. Are things still the same today or have they changed? It's true that all the working Japanese women I know aren't married yet, with the exception of Hana, who is actually Japanese-American. I thought that this routine was becoming obsolete. Is it really still the norm for Japanese women?

I don't think I could deal with that - not working, I mean. My mom works part-time to keep her job which she loves and take care of her kids whom she loves. That's my intention.

Oh, the horrors of Westernization! mad One of the greatest things about Japan (to an American like me at least) is it's very low crime rate, especially among adolescents. I once had $30 stolen from me out of my gym locker at school in the U.S. When I was in Japan, a boy in my group left an expensive camera in his hotel room, and the hotel forwarded it to him. I was stunned by the honesty and hospitality of the Japanese! I very much hope they keep up their singular integrity. It's an encouragement to the rest of the world.

*shrugs* It's definitely true that female Japanese workers get paid less than their male counterparts, and there's fewer opportunities for advancement. Hm, last year, the only other woman in my work group was working part-time because she had a son to take care of and had to leave early each day to pick him up from school. This year, the other woman in my work group has kids, but she works full-time. I'm not sure how that works out - probably, her kids are old enough to take care of themselves during the day.
