When I started I had a large list of must reads, but thankfully I got to cross quite a few off on my way to posting...HOORAY.

Wrede, Patricia C. - Dealing with dragons, Searching for Dragons, Calling on Dragons, and Talking to Dragons.
Smith, Wilbur - Monsoon
Clause, Anette Curtis - Blood and Chocolate (the movie is terrible)
Eugenides, Jeffrey - The Virgin Suicides
Golding, William - The Lord Of the Flies
Tiffany, Grace - My Father had a Daughter
Welsh, Irvine - Trainspotting
Plath, Sylvia- The Bell Jar (better be ready for serious depression)
Blume, Judy - Tiger Eyes
Pattou, Edith - East
Kaysen, Susanna - Girl, Interrupted

Also, anything by Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackey, MaryJanice Davidson, and i know someone already put it (but i can't resist) Biting the Sun by Tanith Lee!! SO amazing.

Oh, and Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series (however once you get past the first like seven or so, its basically just a lot of smut so to speak) I still love them though!

And, Charlaine Harris. She writes the Sookie Stackhouse novels that True Blood is based on.....LIGHTLY based on that is. (books are better.)

There are so many I could suggest if I thought about it, but I highly recommend Sarah's Key, by Tatiana de Rosnay. The book is a fictional tale about a young Jewish girl caught up in a French round-up of Jews in 1942 that could so easily have been completely true. It's an emotionally deep book despite it's fictional background, but definitely worth the read. I started it yesterday and couldn't put it down until I turned the last page.
