Yeah, 'cause people like me like to think that everyone is better than them and will know what they are talking about
Hence I went technical, assuming you can do all this stuff
You may want to get yourself some vocal coaching, but that's not really necesary unless you don't want to rely on your own teachingness... it helps, though
If my mom weren't a voice teacher, I probably wouldn't be able to belt or sing powerfully or do the stuff I can do now

If you want to sound impressive, a good song is "Let Me Fall" from Quidam (it's on the Josh Groban self-titled album in english, please don't make my mistake and sing in Cirquish). It's a pretty pretty song and it's got simple lyrics to make up for the tough notes.
True, it's traditionally sung by a male singer, but it's a high tenor song and it has a bunch of impressive jumps.

Anyway, all technicalities aside, if you want to act while you sing you should consider "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime
I'm not sure about the plot of Ragtime, but I think the song is sung by a woman who got pregnant and then her lover left her and she ended up killing her child because s/he reminded her of the baby's father... it has a big range of emotions
It starts out kind of nostalgic and sweet, then gets angry and builds to a climax, and then it's sad and quiet and regretful

I have learned over the years that the best way to go when it comes to picking a song for auditions is to do your research on the show AND on the people that you are going to be auditioning for.
If the show is all upbeat pop like music, don't go in there and sing "Memory" or something like that. In fact... never sing "Memory" for an audition EVER. It's overdone to death. Find out what kind of music style the show is and sing something in that style. That way it shows them that you can sing that type of music.
Next, try and figure out what the people YOU are auditioning for like to hear. I know that the people that I worked with in high school like to hear things out of the orginary, so I would always sing things that were funny for them like "Summer in Ohio" from L5Y. And I also know that the director I worked with last year at my college likes to hear really emotional songs, so I sang something more slow and meaningful for him. This might be hard to do for some people, but it's not impossible and it pays off in the end. If you sing something that they are gonna enjoy hearing, they will remember you easier.
Most important, stay away from songs that are overdone. Right now, EVERYONE is singing songs from Wicked at auditions cus it's the hot show right now, so stay away from that. Some of the classics are overdone like "Memory," "On My Own," and "I Dreamed a Dream." Those are always audition no no's because EVERYONE has heard them a MILLION times in auditions and often times, they just tune it out.

~Nobody falls in love anymore~
Anyone who can belt or sing alto would do well to sing "Jonny One Note" for their audition. It shows off what an impressive alto you are.

This might not be particularly alto-ish, but "To Keep My Love Alive" is a great acting song, there's so much character you can put into. Some better alto range songs: "A Change In Me", Beauty and the Beast and "Someone Else's Story" from Chess. I adore that song. 3nodding

((You guys can continue this thread, if you want, but I'm just going to say that the auditions I was asking for are over...And since I didn't have time to practise anything else, I was stuck singing "Popular"...I messed up and my voice shook, but I did get a part in the musical...Skater#6...Better than nothing, considering it's my first high school role. sweatdrop ))

[ Amputated Freckle ] Awww Well, I probably will get a small role in my first highschool play too, and I bet almost everyone did, so don't feel bad I don't feel bad...I'm happy to finally be involved. There's always a tiny bit of disappointment when you don't get a really neat part, but once you get your first part, the directors start paying more attention to you...At least this way I don't have any duets or solos. I'm a tiny bit stage fright if I'm not totally in character.

Well I'm a Mezzo-Soprano so its easy to find pieces to fit my voice wel, but the range of songs has gotten quite wide now so it's easy for almost anyone.
A couple of times I have used "Eveyone's a Little Bit Racist" form Avenue Q for three reasons. It's catchy, it has a couple of high notes and it has risky lyrics. Now some people might be offended by it but not if they know the show. I've had people tell me that they love that song but they thought no one would ever do it. Point is it's not too over-done because of the words so it leaves a daring immpression.
That's just me.

I'm a techie but I might be auditioning at SMU soon and they make their techies do two constratsting monolouges as well as a solo ontop of a portfolio briefing (WHYYY????) Or course one guy got in for acting and he sang the frigging Oscar Meyer Weiner jingle XD
Fortunetly, I can sing and if I do audition there I'm either gonna sing "There's a Fine, Fine Line" from Avenue Q or "Storybook" from The Scarlet Pimpernel (minus the weird French part at the end).
I'm an alto even though I'm probably technicly mezzo-soprano...
