Because I want to be a teacher and because I need leadership credits to get into NHS this year, I am teaching a Japanese class at our local recreation centre this autumn. The students are grade 2-4, so I can't do much with language - they won't be interested. So I am focusing more on Japanese culture.
Here are some of my ideas:
- Slideshow of my pics from Japan with music rather than commentary - Bon festival dance - Crafts like origami and maybe sushi rolling - Doraemon video - Japanese songs like that one that goes "Saita, saita, turippu no hana ga naranda..." - Haiku and tanka - Japanese folk tales - Japanese snacks that little American children won't turn up their noses to, like pocky - Aikido demonstration - Simple calligraphy - Examples of traditional dress versus modern styles
Of course I'll do my best to make the classes as interactive as possible, otherwise little kids won't like it and won't pay attention.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for other things I could teach. These are just ideas that I'm in the process of narrowing down. But I'm interested in fresh ideas that may be even more fun for the kids, or anything important you think I've left out.

I would suggest taking the things they like doing, and find ways to work in teaching them about the language, and culture. And also, try telling them some of the old Japanese fairy tales, and legends. and to incorperate as many cute, and cuddly things as possible. And also, kids their age like it when you treat them like an equal, and don't talk down to them. It tends to make them feel more secure, and open to what the teacher has to say.

xd NHS = National Honors Society. Almost made it last year, but got rejected because of lack of leadership skills. This is my last chance.
Thanks Koiyuki, I'll keep all that in mind! ^^

instead of sushi... try making onigiri monsters! we had alot of fun making onigiri in anime club at school, heck even one guy's little sister had fun with it.
and maybe for a random project why not see what they'd manage if they tried making caricatures of each other? they'd probably have fun trying to copy some wacky expressions

akirakurosawa111 in calligraphy do you mean shodo?? Of course. That's a cool idea. It's too bad my school's anime club is a bunch of perverts who only watch hentai videos and don't know how to have intelligent conversation. I don't know how to make cool shaped onigiri, but I'll see if I can find out before the class begins. I don't know about the caricature thing though, I don't really see how it's related. Unless you mean to try to anime-fy each other? I'm probably not going to spend a lot of time on anime - as far as I'm concerned, these kids are too young for most of the anime shown on American TV, except for Yugioh GX and Pokemon. sweatdrop

I don't know. It could be the same thing, unless you're referring to a language honors society. It's mostly based on community service and academic scores. But you have to be in 11th or 12th grade to apply.

You could teach them songs in japanese. Kids would like that. Also some basic phrases, like "konnichiwa".

Maybe teach them Basic phrases and in my japanese class at school something fun that we did was make bento lunches. Not real bento boxes of course. Our teacher just gave us the kind of boxes you get when you take food home from resturants. It was stillf unt hough, we made rice balls and used fruit and had a contest to see who could make the most unique and pretty ones ^_^ I made a kitty rice ball. It might be fun.
