I'm in an (almost) similar predicament and don't know what to do. I can drive now, but I'm still in that stage where I haven't really driven any place far away and my mother certainly isn't going to let me drive to a convention several hours from home! None of my friends are serious enough about cosplay to go to a convention and my mom absolutley CANNOT find time to drive me. Also, though I like the anime I've seen, I'm more into Fantasy/Game/Movie/SciFi/Comic type cosplaying and the only conventions within 2 or so hours are Anime conventions. I'd like to go to Dragon*Con, but it's almost 8 hours away!! What do I do?

Did you try the whole "it's a celebration of Japanese culture and art!" route? That's what I did, and it worked like a charm on my parents. They can't wait for anime cons now, which I find amusing. =o

Just make a deal with parents, or ask friends to drive you.
