Damian: Those men were the castrati, one of the many reasons people were castrated. They were one of the many groupings of vocal tone, as respected as sopranos, altos, tenors, etc. are still today. In order to keep their voices from cracking into much deeper tones, it was decided (by the individual or by force), that they would be castrated. More information here.

As much as the glory-shots of Legolas were overdone, Orlando Bloom is still pretty high up on my hot list. I would have liked Pirates of the Caribbean much better if he didn't spend so much time pining over Elizabeth. Hell, when does any "hero" not pine over the "in-part-distressed" heroine?
