In stories, and fables from all across the world, the males are usually the heroes; the valient, the ones defeding their country from the foreign invasion, while the females are the housewives, the babymakers, and the heroes ultimate undoing.

In todays society, males are seen as strong, dominant, and the ones that get what they want, and triumphing over adversity through hard work, and sheer determination. Women, on the other hand, have been seen as the harlots, the manipulative sneaks that want your investment/insurance/ inheritage/ whatever happens to be hot at the moment, and the people who know how to show you a good time (however you wish to perceive that)

Some people see this situation, and use their charms to their advantage, and use the rules of society, to live the easy, and carefree life; while those who want to be seen as equals are usually faced with adversities the likes of those in the old days (closed minded bosses, pay less than their *fe*male counterparts, no matter the senority, or status, and generally being on the outside looking in)

What I want to know is...

What do the people here think of the gender roles in our world today? Is there any way that they can be changed? Can we truly be equal? And what would your ideal world be? (I, myself, am quite happy with who I am, and I'm willing to go through whatever hardships I have to, to get what I want, and I'm also of the belief we define our own roles, and standings in the world, and that the only thing to blame for your failures, and to praise for your succeses in life is yourself, and not much else. Nothing gets done, if you just sit around and grumble about it)

I've been taught the opposite. I was raised by a feminist who always taught me men are the bad women the good. Though still I believe it highly depends on the peson and not the gender.

As for equality, that may take another 10-20 years yet for women to understand that it's not all positive in equality. Think about it, when a boat's going down what's the saying you always here shouted all about the boat? "Women and children first". Now that a slim chance, but hey it's only one example. Also who's usually the one who pays for a first date? The male. Why? Because it's a commonly accepted stereotype that males have something to prove. In equality, both would be exposed to the same downside as well as that extra $.25 an hour. (I know it more like $1, but that'll take awhile)

Though equality too would have fantastic upsides such as, most problems would be that of the majority of workers not just the males or females, making it easier for companies not to take a bias and choose which to solve first.

But again, that's no going to budge for awhile.

I have always been taught that the girl is the person who cooks and cleans and all that because my mom was raised to think that and now, while she doesn't outwardly say it, she suggests it in the way she does things. Even the little things, like always giving the guys the big glasses and never having them do things like vacuuming and some other chores like that puts it into my sisters and my head that girls are not as important. However, somehow I became more feministic. And my brothers are better cooks than my sister and me. It's weird that way.

Hon, women aren't morons, and they already know that.

Actually, because it's commonly accepted that males have higher paying jobs than females, and that a woman will end up unemployed and raising her husband's children while her husband supports her.

In my vision of the future, gender roles will effectively disappear because gender itself will disappear. What does it mean to be 'male' or 'female'? In different places, very different things.

To draw an example from my own life, because we all know that annecdotes = data, I have, through the internet, met friends in various parts of the globe. One of my best friends is a Pakistani student who spent about the first 6 months of our relationship assuming that I were male. After all, I went to a technical school, studied politics, used/carried weapons, and did other 'male' things. After we exchanged photos, it took about a week of convincing and a testimonial from my then-boyfriend to get him to believe that I really and truly do XX chromosomes.
