hey people! my dad's side of the family r BIG believers in creationsim, which i, of course, hate. anyways i was just eating dinner with my grandparents and was discussing this very topic when my grandmother said, in response to the big bang theory, was that it was easier to believe that a sureme power created everything than everything came together then blow up. she also said, the the big bang theory was like a dude sitting in his garage with a bunch of junk parts, bolts, nuts ect. coming together and making a watch. this of course is utter stupidness because the big bang matter came together, then blew up.

(Addressing the poll question) I attend Sunday services occasionally at a small (Baptist) church less than a mile from my house. I know everything done/said there is bunk, of course. I don't have to, but I sometimes go just for giggles. It's something to break the monotony of sitting at my computer all day gonk . If nothing else, it's a good way to get to know your enemy, as Mr. Sun-Tzu would say. You'll certainly find some things you can use as firepower in later debates. Just try to keep your perspective, and don't drink the cool-aid mrgreen .

If the threats are real, then it's not worth the aggrovation of not going. It's an hour out of your day.
Make a deal with them, if after you go you still think it's bullshit, they stop asking you to go. Worth a go.
Pay attention too, they're usually pretty good demagogues, try to pick out the flaws in their arguments, and notice how they simply fly past it, ignoring it, or making it a joke, or whatever. It could be educational.

Think about what the relevance of this will be in 10 years. Making a fuss at your grandmother over an issue she might lack the intellectual prowess or sheer will power to challenge her opinions of. If you care about your grandmother, when shes not around anymore youll wish you had been quiet and gone just so she'd be happy.
p.s. Most preachers work off faith, not brain power. You should only fear them if you only possess the latter without the former.

My family knows I'm an atheist. They don't ask me to go to church anymore. Of course, my mom never was a big church person.

Some churches are fun. I occassionally, when I'm not in my small town, go and sit in some and just listen to what's going on. The music in some is getting more modern and isn't as painful to listen to as the hymns and if you are able to look past your bias of the bullshit there are some pretty good lessons you can learn.
There is good in everything.
