I have a question. For a Japanese name does it have to be common? Like mixing, for example, Lily and red? I don't know how to put it in words...like say your surname is uncommon in Japan but it still sounds Japanese would it be considered a last name? Like Hitsumori ( though I don't know if that is uncommon or not.).
Yes, you can mix and match characters to make names. It's very fun. A lot of them can even be read different ways - eg.: 愛夏 (love + summer) can be pronounced Aika, Ayaka, Manatsu, etc.
As for your surname question, I don't understand what you mean. Whether it is uncommon or uncommon, as long as somebody has it as a surname, then obviously it exists as a surname.
