Hmm, I have seen cases though (This is for foreign women by the way.) That if they marry a Japanese man, and get divorced, the Japanese goverment will give custody to the father, so I would watch out.

There are cases when women have left the country with their children, and have thought refugee in their native land, where the laws are different, and the father has come and taken the children back to Japan. It is very difficult for your goverment to help you if the children end up back in Japan and can be a very hard and long process to get them back.

So girls, I would suggest you look real careful for a man.

Its something that drives me as an American born Nikkei nuts.
So really long story short, my grandma passed away last year due to health complications. Until then, she was taking care of my grandpa in traditional Japanese fashion. They had an arranged marriage (she was from Japan, he was a Kibei raised in Japan), but anyways, it was really old fashioned. However, when he came to Japan with my mom and myself, it got really hard on us to wait on him hand and foot. He would expect us to carry things for him when we could barely manage our own, and all that. And then when he turned the air conditioner off in my mom/his hotel room in blazing Kyoto whether a few weeks ago, she couldn't turn it on because he'd get mad.
So the other day I was listening to him talk to my aunt in the morning, and he was telling her that my mom was being disrespectful, and because my aunt also is old fashioned, she couldn't see in my mom's favor. Overall, the men here get lazy, and the women stay home and uh, homemake. This includes running off to the store to get beer while simulteneously making dinner, cleaning the house while the husband sits around, stirring coffee with creamer and sugar, coming all the way to the phone when it rings when someone is sitting right next to it and the whole lot for next to no appreciation or acknowledgement. Its really a mess in traditional families. They move away from it slowly, and I have noticed that my younger family members...but still, women do not have a very high place in Japanese society / family from what I have observed for the past month ]:

Exactly, and now because of that alot of women are opting not to get married and not to have children, causing the Japanese goverment trouble because Japan now is the most elderly country in the world with a decreasing birth rate.

I think, that if this keeps going, than the Japanese goverment should put an emphazis on women. They want a to keep the population going? Treat women more kindly. surprised

Than again, I been told to be too outspoken and have been westernized. But I will be darned if I ever let a man push me around and order me to do things. He wants clean underpants? Than he can wash them himself if I don't have time. rofl
