Me too, I'm fascinated by capoeria, although I don't think there's anywhere in my area that I could try it out.
Whenever
Capoeirista.com starts working again, you can always check their database of Capoeira schools for a school in your area. You may be suprised.
3nodding Ooh, that looks good, I can't actually get the school finding bit to work right now but I'll check back.
3nodding I had a wee search and I did actually find one place that does it in my area but they don't have an actual master/instructor and they meet very rarely so I'm slightly wary of getting involved, it sounds like its going to be a bunch of people who don't really know what they're doing.
That's very wise. One should never join a Capoeira group that has no qualified instructor. And if you do, you should at least look into their history and lineage, to see if they are at least under some kind of long distance supervision of a qualified instructor.
Every Capoeira group has a different ranking system, but here are some common "teacher-level" rank titles to keep an eye out for:
Male/Female (translation):
Formado/Formada (Formed Student)
Graduado/Graduada (Graduate)
Monitor/Monitora (Monitor)
Instrutor/Instrutora (Instructor)
Professor/Professora (Teacher)
Mestrando/Mestranda (translation unknown)
Contra-Mestre/Contra-Mestra (Counter-Master)
Mestre/Mestra (Master)
Grao Mestre/Grao Mestra (Grand Master)
