This has been a long-time debate amongst my friends... what is the difference between a hookah and a bong?
My answer: A hookah has the bowl at the top and a hose. A bong has a the bowl on the side, a barrel to toke thru & water in the chamber.
Here's my reasoning. I have a "hookah attachment" for my bong, that basically fits a hose on top of the barrel. Yet it's still a bong, just with a hose. Water is optional in a hookah, while required in a bong.

A hookah has multiple tubes for multiple people. A bong with a tube on it is just a bong with a tube on it.

I don't think you "require" water for a bong ... I have a small bong and I'm really lazy, so I pack bowls and smoke 'em fine without water ... it's just a harsher toke.
Hookah's are fun but hard to handle when very drunk ...
