I use buses.

Ah, lucky. Last time I checked we had a total of five buses for our entire city. If I wanted to go anywhere more than two exits down off the highway I'd have to go to the bus depot and switch buses, and it'd take me over an hour each way. I never bothered. I guess it's good, though, as it did force me to get my license, which I'm glad to have now.

During my entire high school years, I was nagging my mother, asking her to get me a driver's license. Since my mom's family lives in a smaller city not far away from Guadalajara, and since pretty much anybody can drive here in Mexico, we decided I should get my driver's license there.

But the first time she allowed me to use it, was on my first college day. She just said: "Drive your way to school", and that's it. I've been happily driving my car ever since.

Though there's something interesting there. Turns out that my obsession is with American cars, especially any Pontiac car from before 2005... and it turns out that I drive a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire... needless to say, I drive down the winding road that stands between my house and the city like I was driving the AE86 Sprinter Trueno from Initial D, and I've stepped on it all the way to the 176 km/h, which is my car's maximum speed... three times... one of them during the day. confused

Around here, you don't need a permit to drive, you can practice driving with an adult driver (25 or older) once you're 15 1/2. There are restrictions as to driving alone or how many passengers you can have for several months after getting the license, if you are under 18, however.

Eh? Where do you live, girl? eek

I would use buses if:
  • I lived closer to the nearest bus stop, it's 7 km away from my home.
  • The drivers were more careful. They drive like they were racing against each other! It's not really uncommon to have some bus driver throwing his bus right in front of you just to get the right of way. Also, most of the people that get run over in the streets are run over by a bus.
  • The service was better. Riding a bus implies: standing at the bus stop, waiting for a completely random time that's usually between 2 seconds and 45 minutes, praying to God for the bus driver to actually give you the stop, grabbing $0.45 dollars from your pocket, and giving them to the driver. The red buses here in Guadalajara (the "Pre-Tren") are much, much better, kinda like the ones from Paris... but there's just a single line.
  • The service was not as corrupt. Most of the lines are run by an organization of greedy politicians that happen to have their own lines, and they're so greedy, they only spend as little as necessary to keep the buses running and making money.
