Dave Brubeck was critized for beeing to classical, and much of his music has a very classical tendence. It doesn't make it bad.
And when it comes to your friend; it takes time to be a good improviser. It's hard to learn how to let rules go, and just groove to the music. You'll have to let him try without expecting him to be freakin' John Coltrane just like that...
I wouldn't have so much of a problem with it if he wasn't so up himself about it. I don't get annoyed at people for being bad at things, I get annoyed at them for being bad and thinking they are better than people who are better than them.
