Because Boone was dying anyway, and there was nothing Jack could do. Everything he was doing was just making Boone's life longer and more painful, but not changing the end result.

If he cut Boone's leg off, he would have bled to death. If he didn't he would have died from septic shock and internal bleeding from the compartment syndrome. Without proper equipment there was no way to save Boone, not for lack of trying. I really commend Jack's efforts, giving him the blood and putting his own life at risk.

gawd i love his character, i like how he some how manages to save ppls lives with limitted supplies whee (even tho he couldnt save boone crying ) and he's cute too. xd
