'lo jumpers! Welcome to my event for the June 2006 PJs Guild party! It is called Poll Vaulting and, as the name implies, it involves collecting poll data from threads made in the guild. The object of this competition is to make an observation about the guild and it's members, using data from relevant polls as evidence to support your thesis. It is obvious that these polls are not statistically reliable, so none of this is really worth any of our time, if you think about it. Except! my hope is that this will be a fun way to go back through the archives of this guild and learn about or remember the good times that have been had here. Also, to poll whore while you're at it XD. A poor example of a submission will follow this first post, but please, continue reading here to learn more. Rules:- There will be only one competition. - Anyone can enter a submission up untill the cutoff for judging. - Try not to influence poll results by mule voting. There's no way for me to tell if you do, and it's not really reliable either way, but it is more so, as well as more of a challenge, if you try to only work with what you're given. - Don't be necro-ing old threads and geting both yourself an I in trouble with the mods. - I reserve the right to add, remove, or change the rules of this competition at any time. Mostly just 'cause I'm new at this and don't know if I've taken everything into account. Judging:- Will be by me. - Will be on the basis of Insightfullness, Time and effort, Use of sources, Number of sources, Variety of sources, and my own personal biases. - ...Not really though, about the biases. I'll try to be as neutral as I can, and may take other opinions into account if it is obvious that people prefer a certain entry. Fabulous Prizes:- There will be first, second, and third place prizes? - They should be pretty decent prizes to motivate people to put the effort into an entry for this competition? - When wise Zathura delegates prizes, we shall know for sure. - I also usually try to give dinosaur comics as prizes for anything I can, so I might find some relevant ones and give links. Anything for a plug for Mr. Ryan North 3nodding

3nodding My submission (example):Thesis: The gaians of PJs are not health concious enough! gonk Arguments:1) Evidence from the poll of the thread here, where the results stand at 8, 2, and 4 votes for each of the options, respectively, at the time of my submission. It is seen that 8 of us admitted to being 100% sugar fueled, while only 2 of us are sugar free. I could, at this point, go into detail about the negative health effects of eating too much sugar, but this isn't a real entry and I'm kind of a lazy fellow 3nodding 2)Evidence from the poll of the thread here, where the results stand at 4, 3, 2, and 2 votes for each of the options, respectively, at the time of my submission. I propose that the fourth, chip crunching, option in this poll is irrelevant to my thesis as it does not concern diet or health. It is my opinion that votes for the third, balloon filling option could be interepreted either as irrelevant, or, from the wording, as an indication that the voter believes that unhealthy chip snacks are only great for filling up balloons. With this in mind, we can interpret results from option one as in favour of eating chips, option two as against eating chips, and part of the result from option three as against eating chips. If that is accepted, we see that just as many of us are in favour of incorporating unhealthy potato chip snacks into their diet as are opposed to the idea. 3)Evidence from the poll of the thread here, where the results stand at 4, 7, 0, 5, 2, 0, and 5 votes for each of the options, respectively, at the time of my submission. I propose that options 3, 6, and 7 are all irrelevant, option 3 only so because it was not voted for and options for voting against healthy grape snacks were redundant. Results from options 4 and 5 of the poll indicate how many of us agree to the consumption of grape products, but only in a less healthy drug form. Option 1 can be interpreted as anti grape, and option two as pro grape. If all these reasonable stipulations are accepted, it is seen that 11 votes against healthy grape snacks compares to merely 7 in favour of them. Compared to the results from the chip poll above, this is significant. Conclusion: Is optional. If you want to restate your arguments in brief, with regard to your thesis statement, you certainly may. It could improve the presentation of your submission, and shows more effort. Again, however, I'm kind of a lazy fellow myself 3nodding

I look forward to seeing what you come up with for an entry Jobby 3nodding And actually, Proclaimer Rye was one of the people who crossed my mind when I was organizing the event, I think she could do well if she tried. But I would like to see everybody give it a shot, to see what we can come up with. Everyone stands an equal chance of winning, so come on guys and give it a try 3nodding

Using the same format, for lack of a better one. THESIS: The members of Poll Jumpers are not superficial. ARGUMENTS: a. This poll asks wether it's in human nature to call something weird, if it doesn't fit in with what is considered normal. Societal values notwithstanding, the general concensus was that the obvious majority of the poll takers respected and recognized originality and uniqueness. There were several votes for the two other options, which are similar enough to be counted as one. Due to the absence of a strictly opposite poll option, these votes are counted a ssuch. Even so, the recognition option is the leader. b. This thread, and the poll it contains, tells of a rather unfortunate series of incidents happening to the poster's friend. There are several poll options recounting the happenings, plus one which is a general statement of dissatisfaction. This latter option holds the majority, showing that more people can understand the utter misfortune stated therein. There are votes for the other options, but they are disjointed at best, not particularly bound to any standpoint. c. This poll in itself has no real intrinsic value, as it is a standardized poll, used repeatedly for different threads. Still, the options of heart or broken heart, allow a very simple method of yes versus no on the attached issue. The issue is that of an individual who seems to be rather hungry for pity and attention, and the problems it causes others who grow weary of such, and wish to take action. The overall opinion was of support for the poster's stance, although there were several naysayers. d. This thread's poll has nothing to offer in terms of positive or negative, but the thread itself shows the members of Poll Jumpers' inclination towards genuine support and interest in one another. This thread is for the purpose of sharing personal information, to better understand one another, above and beyond what may normally be revealed through simple communications. e. This thread is based upon charitable principles, as it's purpose is to attract attention to fundrasing activities for the guild's festivities. There are options in the thread's poll for no donations, small donations, medium, or large donations. Several of the votes are close, but once again the winner is the large donation, the general opinion seeming to be that much donating shall take place. Even so, the winning vote was technically incorrect. It was easily surpassed, both in gold total and even more so, in items donated. The sheer willingness of guild members to donate for this party was rather staggering, achieving a quite high degree of funds for such. f. The next poll and thread submitted for your perusal is a case of beauty versus value of life. The options of either a vole or a hummingibrd, and the question of which is more worthy of life, is a delicate issue, and the results showed as such. Virtually equal, it seems the guild members recognize the value of life in all things, even compared to one another. Even so, there will be instances where one is more desirable to let live over the other. But such is the understanding of the guildmates that this is a personal issue, handled on a case by case basis, and much too diversified to truly measure. g. A much simpler question, wondering if an individual's avatar looked good, with the addition of an item they had quested for. The general opinion was indeed positive, but not completely so. There were votes in categories other than positive, and the willingness of those who voted, even if they remained nameless, to state their mind was admirable. h. The next thread and poll in question has, at it's heart, an attachment to the earlier example of E. That of adopting newbies, centered upon generosity and a willigness to help others, is primarily a daunting task, as you are to maintain responsibility for the proper 'upbringing' of a newcomer to the site. This is a challenging prospect, and many do not view themselves as ready for it. Even so, the responses were mixed, especially between 'in favor of adopting' and 'in favor but not now'. The overall decision would have to be in favor of adoption, with a few votes to the contrary. i. The final example in favor of my thesis is another delicate matter, concerning the topic of cancer. A popular Gaian movement was to equip a bouquet of daffodils as a gesture of respect for those diagnosed with cancer, whether it be terminal or not. The opinions here were virtually unanimous, with only a single vote for cancer, and almost equal votes for gold or daffodils. The general concensus seemed to indicate that the daffodil movement was highly supported. But a thesis is not proven by positive examples alone; there must be at least one coutnerpoint. Thus, 2a. This thread was discussing a certain faux pas wherein a young man made a rather crude comment without realising it. The poll attached to the thread had several serious poll options, which were all treated to different measures of agreement. But the singular non-serious option was the most heavily frequented. Wether it be because men voted for that one, or just general silliness, or even superficiality, it had skewed the percentages of responses for the poll. This shows that there are indeed some superficial reactions present in us all. CONCLUSION: As my numerous examples and singular counterpoint showed, superficiality is present in all of us, to varying degrees. As a whole it seems many of the members of Poll Jumpers are much more understanding and less superficial than the average person, showing quite high degress of understanding, recognition, compassion and other worthy virtues. They may possess some degrees of other less-worthy attributes, but as a whole I belive it is safe to affirm that the average member of our guild is a good person, who is concerned more with what goes on in someone's head and heart, then with what is on their body.

Update: This party has been going on for quite some time, and I'm pretty sure that anyone who wanted to enter has had ample time to do so. Therefor, I am setting the cuttoff date at the end of this month of July. So finish up those entries that you've been working on, and get them in! Judging should be on August 1st, I do believe, but I reserve the right to take my sweet assed time and/or be a lazy a**! I prettymuch allways reserve that right. It is just how I roll cool

Denouement:A winner is Rye! Congradulations Proclaimer Rye, I think you are the first winnar of any of the events at this party. And though you won by default, being the only one to submit an entry, it was still a damned fine entry that you should be proud of 3nodding Fabulous Prizes for the Rye:- A little something relevant to her well thought out and argued thesis. - Also [Replace later](Zaaaathuuraaaaaaaa!!! That's pretty nifty, although I would have liked to have some other people enter. Being a contest of one isn't very fun, although the piece itself was fun researching.
