My local GSA couldn't understand that being married doesn't mean I'm straight. rolleyes
I wear a rainbow button to work which states that "gay rights are civil rights". I also look rather similar at first glance to a coworker who is gay. And while he doesn't play up any steretypes, he does have a few mannerisms in common with some of the gay male stereotypes. I'm pretty much a "straight-acting" guy at work.
Yet when customers are trying to tell other employees about who they spoke to before (common in a photo lab, where information is gathered by customers during one shift and utilized during another), they invariably refer to me as "the gay guy". When confusion arises, it's all cleared up by the customer explaining that since I wear a rainbow pin, that means I'm gay. They figured that the "gay-acting" guy was just a weird straight dude, since he didn't wear any rainbows.

|Love me|
This guy called me a lesbian because I hugged one of my female friends- a plain, simple hug because we are best friends. And then I told him he was only half-right. He reacts: " *long, long pause* EW, YOU'RE BI?!?! Me: No s**t, Sherlock. I was a social leper in sixth grade because everybody knew I wasn't straight.

Well I don't live in a homophobic town but its not quite the gay heaven, until now I haven't been bashed (because I'm not out) but I don't think I would or at least not much. Primaraly because there is a big gay comunity to the south and many of them venture up here to go to the gay beach (which I've been next to not in it) and I never hear of gay bashings.

It really sucks that bashing happens, gay or straight. I've found out that a few people I know (semi-friends) are homophobic. And neither knew I was bi. The one stopped talking to me unless necessary or other then saying hello when he realised I wasn't straight. The other didn't do much of anything since we work together constantly in the drama department at our school. It's pretty much impossible to do that if you let sexuality get in the way.
But I'm really sick of all the stuff that happens so next year (with the principals permission) my friends and I are starting up a GSA. If anyone's got any tips send 'em my way please.
