La Belle Isolde Jusy The only one I know that isn't on the list is the Original Canadian Cast: Highlights Recording with Colm Wilkinson and Rebecca Caine. How I loathe Colm Wilkinson, he annoys me enough as Valjean in Les Miz, let alone as a character I love; I try to forget that the Canadian recording exists *sulks because her own country's performance sucks* Well, I'm Canadian too and I like him. I personally think his unique singing style adds a lot of emotion to the parts (except in Jekyll and Hyde... he didn't really do a good job in that one). Though personally I like getting different cast recordings and comparing them. It's always great to note the differences in emphasis and whatnot. smile

I've not even a big Les Mis fan, but somehow Colm Wilkinson has and will always be permanantly equated with Valjean in my mind. I can't even take him seriously in Phantom. I keep hearing, "Who am I? 24601!" in the back of my head every time I listen to it. o.O; Rebecca Caine is great, though.

Well I heard him as Phantom before I heard him as Valjean (and he technically was my first Phantom) so that's probably why I can stand him as good ol' Erik.
Yeah, Rebecca Caine is great. Especially when she does the ending for 'Think of Me'. I actually prefer her over Sarah Brightman. Her voice is a bit lower but she enunciates better and I love her interpretation.

So did I, actually. xD I don't know, he just embodies Valjean so well... it's sort of like Michael Crawford in EFX or Woman in White; he's fine in the role, he's just better as the Phantom and that's what sticks in your head.
I like Rebecca Caine better than Sarah Brightman in general, actually. Her voice is much richer.
Should we even make an attempt to list the buttload of POTO Studio Casts? Off the top of my head I know there are ones with Graham Bickley and Claire Moore, Ethan Freeman and Claire Moore, Michael Heath and Kira Bronte, and about five unlisted casts...

It really takes some time to get used to Sarah Brightman's voice, and I still don't really love it. She definitely can reach the right notes, but is it just me or does she sing like she's got something lodged in her throat?
As for phantoms, i've listened to a lot of them, and most I can stand..but Colm does nothing for me. The guy needs to shave and stop singing so choppy. Michael Crawford is my all time favorite though. I have his cast recording and thats the one i usually listen to the most. His "All I ask of you (reprise)" just breaks my heart cry

I say that the London Cast Recording is by far the best, because it is the original. smile Go Michael Crawford!
