Mayu turned to watch the animal run off, arching her brows in surprise. She was almost tempted to follow it for a moment, though stopped herself. No matter how cute a wild animal seemed, it could still be dangerous.

The child toned down her stomping a bit, realizing that she was exhausting her energy rather quickly by walking that way. She would have to save at least some energy for the exploring that they would do once they got to the tavern...

"Rest sounds nice," she replied, yawning slightly. It would be anticlimactic if all they did was sleep once they reached the place, Mayu did admit, but they did need the rest. She was almost a bit surprised that they hadn't collapsed on that grassy patch near the cathedral right then and there, after that tiring experience.

Not too much longer than that, the children reached a fork in the path. Demare stopped as he eyed the "roads", studying the left before looking toward the right. Well, this wasn't good... They couldn't afford to take the WRONG path this late at night, especially if one was more dangerous than the other. They were also too deep into the forest to simply give up and turn back.

"Hmmm..." the halfling hummed, trying to think. It would be useless to only go down one of them partially, as they split into two opposite directions; the right seemed to go downhill, while the left appeared to go up.

"Well... which do you think?" he finally asked Mayu, not sure how good her sense of direction might have been.

Mayu's eyes shifted from the left path to the right, then the left again.

"I really don't know," she admitted, with a slight shrug of her shoulder. Either path looked good to her, but it would be a disaster if they picked the wrong one.

"I can do eenie-meenie-miney-mo if you want," the child suggested, with a sheepish grin. It was not the most logical way of picking a path, but it would do for a simple solution without all of the thinking.

She pointed to each path as she spoke the rhyme, her finger finally landing in the direction of the right path. Mayu looked over to Demare with a shrug, waiting for him to voice an opinion before they went on.

He blinked a few times at the way she decided to choose, thinking that it was rather silly. What a childish way to do something... But then again, they were still children, even if they acted quite a bit more mature.

"The right it is," he shrugged, smiling a little bit. Demare began to walk with her in that direction, his leathery wing tucking in close to his back while his feathery one brushed across Mayu's shoulders a little bit, as if trying to wrap around her.

"How are your feet, by the way? I kind of forgot you were wearing sandals when I mentioned doing this..."

Mayu moved a little closer to Demare, laughing a bit as the wing tickled her shoulders. She took care not to poke him with her branches, which shuffled out of the way slightly so that she could walk closer together with him.

"My feet?" she asked, glancing down. "They're fine, why do you ask?"

It hadn't quite occured to the girl that most people would usually wear sneakers or boots in a situation like this, having worn sandals for every occasion. Sure, the occasional pebble would get under her feet from being kicked up, but they were easy to get rid of...

"What about you?" she asked, glancing at the bandages around Demare's arm and chest. "Do you need any more rest?"

"Hmm? Oh, I'm fine for now," Demare assured her, smiling to hide the dull pain he felt in his abdomen. He could feel the muscles in his legs tighten up a little bit, but he figured he'd be able to hold out at least a little while longer. They needed to make as few stops as possible, he figured, just to be on the safe side.

"I was just asking because I thought they might hurt from all the walking we've been doing today," he explained, shrugging one shoulder. "I take it you wear them a lot, so I guess you'd used to it."

"Well, feel free to take a rest if you need to," Mayu said, worried expression still lingering on her face. She kicked up pebbles and twigs as she walked, almost reverting back to the march she had been doing before to show him that she was perfectly fine in sandals.

For the rest of the walk, Mayu spent her time observing the various bushes and plants that they passed, marveling at the different types that she would have never seen in Durem. As they rounded a large curve, she squinted to make out two paths branching out up ahead.

"Another fork?" she asked, though it was more of a thought than an actual question. "This forest is like a maze, or something..."

Demare squinted his eyes a little bit toward the fork up ahead, realizing something. They'd just gone in a complete circle; what were the odds of another fork having the same directions? The left going up and the right doing down.

He didn't have the heart to tell her this, however, and hoped she didn't notice.

"I guess it IS like a maze," he said a bit idly, chewing on his bottom lip a little bit. "Well, since we went right last time, how about we go left?"

Mayu scratched her head with her free arm, the bag of snacks slapping against her side as she lifted her arm. Something seemed familiar about this area, but she couldn't quite make it out... It was something about the arrangement of trees that stood out to her. She shrugged it off as merely a coincidence, however, not giving much thought about it.

"Left it is!" she agreed wholeheartedly, glancing down the path cheerfully. With all of the walking they had done, they were sure to be getting close... right?
