Wendy_Chan shannabanana Wendy_Chan Eh, I must say, I don't really like Romeo and Juliet as a love story (even though it's a classic) because it's so unrealistic--love within three seconds? Come on... The 1968 version was much better than the one with Leonardo DiCaprio, though. :B There's one with Leonardo DiCaprio in it? He's cute!! =] He is really adorable, but the dialogue and everything else was cheeeeezy. xD I don't like how they modernized it. I'm a Shakespeare purist, and I like it best when they're portrayed in the era they're supposed to be portrayed in.

Romeo was seventeen, not thirty. It did say they were adolescents in the Shakespere text, after all.

We had to watch West Side Story in chorus class and I thought that it was lame and I don't know why it is such a classic!!!

Why do you all hate West Side Story! I think you are all concentrating to hard on the fact that it is a copy of Romeo and Juliet and are forgetting that it is a musical. It is most definetly a classic.
Did you actually ever listen to the lyrics in some of the songs.
My sister had a moustache, my brother wears a dress, hokey dokey, nu wonder I'm a mess
And how many times have I burst out singing I feel pretty oh so pretty though actually that is a little repulsive.
The rape scene was wierd too.

I didn't until my second (or third) watching. It's when Maria's friend "Nurse" (i can't remember names) goes to the drug store to tell "Romeo" about Maria, and then the guys from the other gang do this wierd dance. And then she gets all angry at them and says that Maria was shot. And leaves. It is just weird and wrong.
