I'm half-korean raised by an American mother and Korean father, but my dad was raised in kentucky after he was adopted so the Korean influence kinda went away. I only know a few phrases like hello, goodbye, yes, no, thank you, and did you come from America. sweatdrop

I can read & write Korean characters, however, I don't know the definitions of most words. Some of my Korean students taught me their language during our spare time.

I see hanja occassionally on signs and the like, but I don't really see it used too often. I get a little excited when I see it, though, because I studied Japanese for about two years at university. As far as learning the language is concerned, I find that immersion is the best way to go. I've been living in Korea for about six months now, and while I didn't know any Korean before I came here, I'm able to function just fine here... and I've even been given the unofficial job of translator when I go out with my foreigner friends. It really helps to have a handful of Korean friends that forget I can't speak Korean. 저는 한국어가 좋아요. 한국어 공부 시작한 지 엿 달이 되었어요. sweatdrop

i guess i can start you out with the alphabet. since no one really teaches how to read around here....
Consonants ㄱ (gee-uk) ㄴ (ne-eun) ㄷ (diggot) ㄹ (leul/can make "l" or "r" sound) ㅁ (me-um) ㅂ (bee-eup) ㅅ (shii-ut) ㅇ (ee-eung) ㅈ (jee-ut) ㅊ (chee-ut) ㅋ (kee-uk) ㅌ (tiggot) ㅍ (not 100% sure on this, but pee-eup) ㅎ (hee-ut)
feel free to correct me.. when i use the alphabet i always do it by 가나다라마... so that's why i might have forgotten.
Vowels ㅏ (ah) ㅑ (yah) ㅓ (uh) ㅕ (yuh) ㅜ (oo) ㅠ (yoo) ㅗ (oh) ㅛ (yoh) ㅡ (euh) ㅣ (ee)
now to form words, you add these together.
for example: ㄱ + ㅏ = 가
Dog = kang-ah-jee
강 아 지.
"ㅇ" has 2 different uses. 1. if at the end, it will have the "ng" sound like in "kang" = 강 2. if at the beginning, it will have no sound at all... it will follow the sound that is after it like in "ah" = "아" or lets say you want to say milk (oo yoo) 우 (oo) + 유 (yoo)
you'll have to understand the characters sounds very well until you can move onto forming words.
this also DOES NOT mean i covered everything to be discussed about reading. there are also different uses for "ㅊ" like in flower or 꽃. i didnt even cover these: ㄲㅆㅃ..etc. this is just a little of what you should start out with. sorry i might have confused you more o_o

iP e n q u i n I'm learning Korean sweatdrop Its taking me forever, haha. If you can read hangeul, I'd recommend the Basic KLPT book. I bought it at Bandi & Luni's in Jong-no, Seoul, and it's helping me reinforce what I've been learning informally. 3nodding
