Well a lot of things that we see today as science were once considered to be magic so there is a possibility. If the unexplained magic ever became explainable or accepted as existing by the majority of society. Than I think it might possibly be considered a science.

necromancer girl Well a lot of things that we see today as science were once considered to be magic so there is a possibility. If the unexplained magic ever became explainable or accepted as existing by the majority of society. Than I think it might possibly be considered a science. The one thing that makes magic not a science, IMO, is how fickle it is. You have certain people that will be inherently better at it than others; it's not like mixing the same amount of baking powder with the same amount of vinegar, and getting an approximately equal amount of fizz. There's an explanation for magic, but it's not "stable" enough to be science.

I had a chance to think and i dont think magic would technically be a science if you look at the issues. Magic is chaotic by nature. It forces things out of place to do its will. Science is a mathetically certainity (unless you want to get really deep into it and lets not because thats not the subject) for all reasonable instances though- it is a mathmateical certainity that science is true to nature and thereby assuring its origin and its exact formula's. Magic can't say that.

In my opinion, the concept of magic as an un-tamed science, is quite valid. While I hold no certification in science to back any opinions I make, I feel that these powers or incidents are scientific. I feel that any unexplained scenario of human producing some variety of supernatural or magical power is a case of mutation or genetic evolution in specific cranial lobes of the brain. While I still adhere to the thought of external supernatural existences, I feel there are scientific explanations in certain cases. The only reason these cases would lead to speculation of uncontrollable powers is because we do not understand the nature of the development, and more specifically, have been unable to find controlled methods to repeat the condition in lab tests. Sorry, a little ranting...that is in fact my opinion regarding those situations.

I agree. Magnetism, electricity, meteors, and hallucinations were once part of the realms of magic because they were not understood. Magic today, using invisible forces and energies that surround us, are simply future discoveries as well, along with psychic powers, telekeniesis, ect.

Although I really have nothing to add on the topic as I am not really sure of own opinion on the subject...
I can say that I think people are taking the word science too literally. The word science covers a vast amount of topics. Most sciences are still theoretical and not even proven and those that are, are usually nearly impossible to comprehend for the average human being. Science goes a lot further than school subjects. mrgreen
Now that I think about it...I think its totally plausible that magic is a science.

I believe that magic may one day be recognized as what we call science. As others have said things that were once called magic, now have an explanation and are called science. Even in science though, there are plenty of things we admittedly don't know about. For example, in scientific theory a bumble bee can't fly. So obviously there aren't plenty of things we still don't know. The universe is complex. So just cause we call them two different things and one is less understood, doesn't mean they can't be the same thing
Also, for those who say magic is chaotic- There's even an order in chaos. Just because you can't see or understand the pattern doesn't mean it's not there.

you knoww that there is many things we dont understand. do you think that God is magic or science for example? many people say that it could be two elements working together like clockwork and them working makes all things possibe...
just a theorey...

I disagree with that. I don't think that magic is science since magic follows no pattern whatsoever and there are many things in science that aren't proved and a lot of things that can't be explained with science and that when people try to expain them thay come up with theories that can't be proved or those things that can't be explained are classified as "Illusions" or they say that those things simply don't exist.

I could be, I think. It's possible that magic is simply working on a scale we haven't reach yet... maybe another type of atom or something. Another Element for the periodic table. ^_^
It is possible that all magic really is, is us affecting some type of energy/mater, and we just haven't been able to physically identify that mater yet. Who knows?

To me it's not a question of beliefe as much as it boils down to scientific points of view. Truth be told it might be as easy as using quantum physics to describe mathmatically how we might be able to bend the laws of nature to harness the lements. this mght also include the uses of either kenetic energy and or mental energy. (I.E. telekinetics). On an additional not, quantum physics might be able to be used to mathmatically descibe how we might be able to harness the metaphysical side of things. Well thats how i see it anyway.
