im in my highschools jazz band and concert band, and that local colleges jazz band and concert bandthere too, and i thought of the combo because some of the pplthat do all of those with me are good, and it would be great for us to do something a little more personal, and it would be a lot of fun

You also get more experience with longer solos.
There's a HUGE difference between the kind of soloing you do if its just 8 measures or a full 32 bar head.

Now I have a terrible time with establishing a combo. I usually play clarinet with some of the jazz college kids. I live in Texas and if you find a gutiar play who knows more than five chords it is a miracle. Any time I play with some of our high school kids no one can read a lead sheet or solo. I play piano a bit and get stuck there in most of those situations. Drummers are running everywhere, just no good ones. I you have a piano player you can survive without a bass if the can walk a line and you horn player can solo long enough. Wow, I need to move to a bigger town.

Yeah it's hard enought to put together a group in Seattle whcih has a rich musical history.
